Default Hello From New Member

I just wanted to formally introduce myself to the 850 forum.

Last week I picked up a 5 speed 1996 850 GLT (N/A) Wagon. It has about 158,000 miles on it. I say about because the odometer wheel broke at 147,673 about a year ago. There a few other things that need to be fixed such as: The rear passenger side strut mount, sunroof track, and left front lower control arm. I also have to replace the front tires.

An undiagnosed problem I'm having with the car is every time I shift and hit the gas the rpm's climb but the car does not accelerate w/ it. This also happens if I try to accelerate briskly while in any gear from a cruise. It's like the car can't keep up w/ the rpm's. If I hit the gas pretty hard the rpm's shoot up and then drop back down again to catch up w/ the car. This issue persist but I do not have a check engine light.

Today I'll go to Advanced Auto to get it scanned to see if any codes are stored.

This is my first Volvo and I'm absolutely loving it.

Welcome to the forum.
Sounds like the clutch is slipping.

Thanks for the welcome.

I was affaid that the symptoms pointed to the clutch. Oh well, another item to add to the fix list.

When you change the clutch it would probably be good to change the rear main seal also, even if it is not leaking. It would suck if it started leaking like a 1000 miles after you changed the clutch, then the trans would have to be pulled again.

Thanks for the advice. I will have my mechanic do so.

welcome to the forums. you wont need to go anywhere else for maintenance advice i guarantee it.i agree with dan2286.you should also check the vent system(pcv).if it is clogged it will blow out the rear main seal and pump oil out the top thru the oil filler cap.the way to check is to pull the dipstick while the car is warm and idling.if smoke bellows from the tube then you should replace it.good luck with the car.

Thanks!!!

There's some great DIYs on this site, so I may tackle a couple repairs myself.
