Probably the evaporator. Known to go bad on these cars. Any where from $1300 to $1600 to have it done. Two days of tough work to do it yourself and then you have to have somebody charge it for you.

Check the A/C clutch gap first.

Good call on the compressor clutch gap. I would suggest checking that as well just to be sure, but I too suspect the evaporator

From what I have read it seems that the main problem with the evaporator is leaking. If that is true would that not rule out the evaporator. I did have to add some gas but it did cool just not enought when it got hot allthough it did cycle on and of. I got the car in april and it had been sitting for 3 months so I woulg think that it has not been charged since last year at the earliest.

You should NEVER have to charge them. If you do it's leaking somewhere, and the most likely culprit is the evaporator. When it is low on R134A it will cycle on and off until it is too low and then it will not come on at all. When it is fully charged it will stay on until it reaches the coolnes set in the car.

There is also some good stuff on the clutch gap here:

and here:

Be sure to read N8-50's pdf writeup.

And then there is the ghetto fix here:

what's wrong with the "ghetto" fix if it works??? plus if the clips ever fall out, they are made of plastic and will hurt NOTHING....unless someone can convince me to do the job right on this commuter car, I see no reason why this isn't a better option...

I never said there was anything wrong with it. I've never tried it so I don't know how well it works.

As an engineer I tend to be very precise when I repair things but I've also MacGyvereda lot ofstuff in my life when I'm in a pinch.

Lee, you're always welcome in a gas-turbine engine shop.

BTW, is MacGyver still around? That also reminds me of the pilot for the Air Wolf (the modded Bell-222 rotorcraft that flies at Mach-1 without suffering shock wave stall on the rotor blades) and the driver guy for that Pontiac Knight-2000 (David Hasslecough or something of that sort).

Good old 80's...

Sometime the A/C system can suck in a slight amount of moisture over time and, if this happens, when the A/C is turned on, the moisture in the system will 'ice' up fairly quickly.

The system will then shut down until the ice melts and the cycle starts all over again.

Its probably not the cause of your problem, but it's just my $0.02 worth.

when this happens, isn't it cause the drier no longer works?

What's up with our apostrophes? I tried to edit my previous post and it still came back doubled in every instance. I wonder what will happen if "quote"?
