help!!! sudden miledge drop, exhaustion pipe red hot??
Help!
i've got whole situation here!
while changing my timing on 850 the crankshaft mark went to the right (towards the front) aprox. 1 cm,
after i put everything together car wasrunning great, but later ive stucked on a highway becauseit was smoking underneath it, i figured it was my exhaustion pipe underneath my engine, it turned red. my fuel codes shows me celinders missfire? and i get 10 miles per gallon now!!!
is crank mark deal with it or something else??

RE: Help!!! crankshaft mark, now
sounds exciting Jim! lol
but i mean, could it be something wrong with injector or gas pump or something with electronic? i ran 5000 milessince i changed timing belt and no problem, i was getting 25 miles per gallon after timingchange.
and itjusthappened quick, it still runsnormally, but it gets 10 mi per gallon only and i think radiator fan turns on more than usually. yeah and termometer shows normal temperature too. my volvo got 90 000 mi on it.
i really appreciate your help Jim!

RE: Help!!! crankshaft mark, now
Well that's different. If it ran fine for 5,000 miles that's not the problem unless it slipped further, which is doubtful. Is the CEL light on? When was the last time you put plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor on it? Those being bad would not cause it to all of a sudden drop mileage like that though.
I'm going to move this to the 850 forum so others with 850's will see and respond.

i was driving it today again, while pushing on gas it feels like itwont go any faster. i've never eventhought about clogged converterbefore. i think it could be it,because engine sounds same as it was before,no changes.
technicly how oftenit should bereplaced on 850's?
Also can overheated cat causes theengine to quit?

RE: Help!!! crankshaft mark, now
Over the years so far i have only seen one clogged.
But have seen a couple come apart inside.
If the cat is in pieces then one piece might be getting pushed up against the back part of the pipe and cutting off air supply to the exhaust. Eventually it might make the car stall.

RE: Help!!! crankshaft mark, now
Dear friends!
back to my story,
i worked on my timing for about 2-3 days, i lined up exostion and intake cameras perfectly, but the bottom one won't line up so it went 1cm right, after i started it it was working perfectly, i was getting 25-30 mi on a highway and i ran 4000-5000 mi on it with any problem, one day my car wont start when it was a little worm, but when its cold or hot, no problem, couple of days later i stucked on a high way thats when my converter turned red hot, my diagnostic codes would show me missfire in more than 1 celinders, do you guys thinkit could be thereason that my converter broke up?
my english is in beginning process so sorry about that!

RE: Help!!! crankshaft mark, now
According to you original post, you have a cylinder misfire. This can definately cause the problem you have. You really need to check that out first.
Is the engine running rough, like it's running on 4 cylinders?
I wouldn't drive it until you address the misfire, you will damage the cat, if you haven't already.

i definitelly think it is converter!
but is there any way i can make sure that thats the problem before i buy it, because at the AutoZone they charged me almost 500$, which is painfull.

RE: Help!!! crankshaft mark, now
One way you could check to see if the cat is the problem, is to cut it off, and put a piece of flexible exhaust pipe in its place temporarily. If that fixes the problem, then it is definitely the CAT. IF not, then you can have the cat welded back on and go from there.
