Home Made Camshaft Locking Tool
Can anyone tell me what thedimensions of the slots on the cam shafts are, and the centerline distances between them are? I'm trying to make a tool to hold the camshafts in alignment so that I can work on it, but my book does not give me the dimensions to the home made tool. Can anyone help me with the dimensions on this tool, or give me the dimensions of the camshaft slots and the centerline between them?I'm trying to change the oil seals, and the book is telling me that I need a tool to hold these things. I need to make this tool at work, and I need my car to get there, so I can't take it apart and measure it because I'll never get to work to make the tool. :-) Thanks!!!
Hi Ed,
As I do not have the 850 any longer, I am unable to measure the dimensions. I can only give you an attachment. Please note, that I'll have to delete it within the next few days so be sure to save it in your PC.
And wait to see if someone else can reply with correct dimensions.
Good luck,
JPN

The Haynes manual also has a description of such a tool. Don't have the manual in front of me, but I believe they were using two strips of steel in a standard thickness about an eighth of an inch thick. What manual are you referring to?
The tool would be a pain to make.
If you are only replacing the seals it really isn't needed.
You can mark the pulley good.
Then make a mark on the pulley and cam.
Then you will be fine. If the cam moves when you take the belt off just reposition it when installing the belt.
I only use the cam tool when doing seals on the newer cars with VVT.
Then cam moves when the pulley stays still.
