How far should the new rear main seal be pushed into the block?
1996 volvo 850 GLE 10v here, i just replaced the rear main seal but am worried that i pushed it in too far. My father was helping at the time and being an experienced mechanic, i trusted when he said it should go in until it stops. I however have read otherwise, and im worried im going to have tp spend another 30 dollars on another seal. The seal is currently pushed about 3 mm in the block, and thats where it stopped. What do you guys think? Any input is appreciated
From the manual, it doesn't say how far to insert the seal. It looks flush to the block.
REAR MAIN OIL SEAL * PLEASE READ THIS FIRST * NOTE: Always refer to appropriate engine overhaul article in the ENGINES section for complete overhaul procedures and specifications for the vehicle being repaired.
INSTALLATION
For one-piece type oil seal installation, coat block contact surface of seal with sealer if seal is not factory coated. Ensure seal surface is free of burrs. Lubricate seal lip with engine oil and press seal into place using proper oil seal installer. See Fig. 27.
