How many miles is an 850 good for?
Hey i was wondering what these 850's are getting for mileage? How many miles are on yours? When do the auto transmissions start to hickup a lil? what's the life of a properly treated engine. how many miles is it common when compression dropps off? all these questions are assuming proper maintenance is done
assuming an engine has 300000 miles has good compression isn't noisy runs smooth with proper maintenance like timing belt and ascociated work preformed is this still a reliable engine same for transmission.
how is running gear holding up on higher highway mileage cars, are ball joints, tie rods and other wearing suspension almost ready for replacement? what kind of life is on that stuff!
Thanks
-Mike

RE: How many miles is an 850 good for?
Well, I'm sure it is FAR from a record, but my kids 95 850 Turbo has 173K on it and it runs great! Not that it doesn't have a problem or two. The biggest ones being a small leak in the AC, bleeding off the freon every couple of months, and what just started as a small transmission problem. It shifts great all the time, but the issue is that when cold, going into Reverse from any gear is smooth and quiet, except once it is warmed up, going into Reverse from any gear results in an annoying "thunk" into gear. I attribute this to the original owner never changing hte tansmission fluid in the first 165K of life.
I suspect with regular maintenance and staying on top of isses as they come up, 300-350K is not out of the question

my 96 850 turbo is sitting pretty at 190k - although due for an oil change and tranny fluid change, and i think a timing belt ?

Get the fluid in your transmission changed ASAP.
My standard issue cut-n-paste..
1) Brake Pads and Rotors
In my experience, OEM pads only last 25K miles. Rotors must be replaced, they can't be turned.
2) ATF (Dexron-III) will be black.
I would not power flush, in fear that debris will break loose and cause problems.
Here are procedures that I used to drain and fill...
https://volvoforums.com/m_25657/tm.htm
Best option is to purchase ATF DIY flush kit from
http://www.ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.as...549&RootID=629
This does NOT apply to 1999 and newer Volvo(s) which have AW55-50/51SN transmission. This transmission requires Mobil/Volvo JWS 3309. It is not synthetic. It is expensive -- $18/quart.
3) Do NOT use power steering fluid. Our systems use Dexron-III.
4) Volvo no longer sells 87C/190F thermostat. Do NOT use OEM 90C/195F, purchase 87C/190F Wahler from
http://www.fcpgroton.com
Here are procedures that I used to replace thermostat and ECT...
https://volvoforums.com/m_16392/tm.htm
5) Misc.
-- purchase a hydraulic jack to lift front of car for oil changes
-- purchase a pair of jack stands (place on engine sub-frame)
-- purchase a package of aluminum crush washers for oil drain plug
-- purchase a magnetic oil drain plug from FCPGroton (optional)
-- purchase one aluminum crush washer for ATF drain plug

RE: How many miles is an 850 good for?
Thanks for your Reply Robert, I had read your "cut and Paste" thing before and i was going to do a search to read that tranny procedure again and to surprise you posted it on here!! thank
I ran about 9 litres od atf through my tranny today and sure enough it was black, i did get red fluid to come out on the third drain and the fluid on the dipstick is red now too, hopefully this helps it was so easy to do I'll probable do it again in a few months, How often do you do it?
as for replacing the thermostat cap, is that something I should look in to doing, Is this a repair for piece of mind or is it probably neccessary? Do thes stats fail in the closed position or open position? Other than the cover on the coolant bottle is there a pressure relieving device like a rad cap or something that keeps an ideal pressure in the coolant system?
Thanks
-Mike

Hi guys and gals
I just purchased a Volvo 850 and it's at 349,000 as we speak lmao.
The best part about that is I'm from Canada where it sees snow all the time. The car is mint and I love it. I get it Friday there just doing the certification as we speak

My '97 850 GLT has 249K on it, I had to rebuild the turbo a few months ago, and I had the trans replaced at around 160K, I do all regular maintenance to her and she's running like she should, and the reason I most likely had to do the rebuild of the turbo and the rebuild of the trans is because the car is heavily involved in autocross.

Most of the thermostats that have worn out and failed on me, simply just started working slowly -- never really failed, just became very lazy, causing my engine to overheat. A 87C/190F Wahler thermostat only costs about $12 (the Engine Coolant Temp sensor -- listed as IAF or something like that on Volvo part description -- costs about $40). Cheap insurance considering the cost of replacing a cylinder head.

I want to try that "winter" function and see how that does.
These cars need a lot of maintenance but i hear they run for a long time.
Do you guys think 124k miles is too high for synthetic/ I have a case in my garage and I want to use it. LoL...

as far as you said that these cars need a lot of maintenance, I'm not sure well other than PCV syseem if they're any different as any car as far as maintenance goes

Yesterday, the indicator column switch gave out, metal fatigue is my best guest. Currently looking for a used replacement.
Glove box was broken when I got it, I repaired it with two hard-drive magnets
It survived a 3000km road-trip (10 days) with little more than half a quart of oil added.
It's a turbo, btw. If you have more questions, just ask.
(I'm a student, got 2 more years of university ahead of me, and I want it to last that long. Student budget, you know )
