I really need to get beter fuel economy.
Mine SUCKS.
The average on the computer is about 19.6 right now.
Should be about 25 or so.
I think its time to do the PCV job.
ugh..
I want to bypass that and use an ebay oil catch can like my friend did on a Saab 9000. Doable? How could I do this?

Im not sure I would not try that. I would just fix the OEM setup.
You can do what you want.
Also did you already do the tune up on the car?

I put new plugs in (bosch platinum +2), haven't done the cap, rotor, or plugs yet.
My thinking was to see if it would be a reasonable alternative to spending over $100.
Plus they look cool!
I need to post pics of what the car looks like now.

If you need help with the PCV

If the wires are OEM see how old they are. They will have a date stamped on them in either white or yellow writing.
Also pull the cap and look for burn marks inside the cap.

Yeah I need to do that as well.
I'm not so much worried about actually doing the work on the PCV system. I've done worse. I am always about finding new ways to make things easier and more fun.

What other reasons could be of bad fuel consumption - as my 850 does about from 13.4 to 17 (if lucky) mpg in the city.
total millage of the car is 50.000 with something
thanks

- Full tune-up.
- Retiring O2 sensor(s); 2 for turbo.
- Unnecessary cargo.
- Wheel alignment/tyre pressure.
- A/C or defrost turned on at all times.
- Etc...
Verdict: Whatever is making the engine to work harder.
My 2nd reply at the following may help:

JOLLY...i think he means to change the current o2 with a new one...you can;t run the car with out one (the front one that is)..the rear is just there to monitor the front one to see if it's working...

Fuel consumption...
Lets see, start with the engine, make sure it is breathing efficiently and is running properly.
1. Plugs, new Just NGK Vpowers or some other basic 'good' plug
2. Air filter, fuel filter, Wires, Cap Rotor
3. PCV, clean check and replace whatever necessary.
4. Seafoam treat the engine...do the whole thing, Put it in your gastank, suck it in a vacuum tube and pour some in your crankcase... let it idle for 15 mins then
5. Go to a lighter weight oil, I use 0w-40 or other zero weight synthetic with a new filter
6. Check your exhaust to make sure it is in good order...
7. Use the proper fuel for your car...I notice my mileage goes up when I use 89 or higher octane.
Next...
as JPN points out proper Air in your tires is the #1 reason for poor fuel consumption
2. Alignment, get it checked
3, Balance and rotate the tires
4. Verify brakes are not rubbing and wheel bearings are in good shape
5. Flush your tranny and refill with good new fluid
Last...
Keep your car clean, this while subtle it does help reduce wind drag resistance.
Make sure your shield below your engine is in place and tight so as to reduce wind drag...
Learn Hypermiling techniques, these can save you a bundle of fuel...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermiling
basically, no jackrabbit starts or stops, coast when possible, don't needlessly run your engine, draft when possible and safe, accellerate smoothly and decellerate smoothly, learn to read the lights so you can use momentum...be a smart and conscious driver...
Sure some of these will cost you some $ but in the long run if it is economy you are after, I cannot think of anything else that would add to your economy...

JOLLY, I think he means to check for possible codes for bad O2 sensors and have them replaced with direct-fit OEM Bosch sensors, if the same codes return.

And if you are in the mood...Get a ECU upgrade or a chip.
You should use ~10% less gas, when your not mashing the pedal [sm=smiley2.gif]
Of coures, you need to have a solidstage 0 before you do anything like that.

Oh, okay. I thought that you could not run it without the o2 sensor but was unsure after reading that. I knew they had redundant ones after looking to replace mine. Thanks guys!

My car would barely run with the multi pronged Bosch plugs, the gap cannot be set and it is way to wide. I run OEM Volvo plugs in my turbo and the cheap Bosch coppers in my N/A models. Gap them to 0.028.

When I took out the old plugs, there were three Champions, an AutoLite, and an NGK.
Champions are friggen lawn mower spark plugs!
I am, right now, ordering the PCV system from FCP, along with a new 87 degree thermostat.

I would go over the car once againto make sure that nothing came from a Ford Pinto[8D].

>Many Aviation engines use Champion Plugs.
I do not know of any recips that do not use Champion plugs.
>So, maybe instead of getting your champions at your local KMart in the lawnmower section
How did you know that? I think you can read people’s minds, including mine.
The factory manual does appoint Champion RC7GYC for turbo.
It is strange that the Bosch +2 seems to work great on some 850s including mine, while they are nothing but trouble for others. I would say the best plugs are probably genuine Volvo.
The triple-quote has some sort of psychological effect, BTW[&:].
