idles dropping
I went for a drive the other day after about 45min i stopped to take some pics.
while taking them i noticed the revs dropping (bout 600 rpm)and raising (to idle).
then today did the same thing after a short drive, was goin to do a tune-up
but was think it could be throttle positoning sensor.
I know it could be anything but input would help.

Hi,
Idling problem is one of the most prevalent problems yet they are the most challenging, sometimes.
Before suspecting the TPS, try retrieving codes from the ECU. If your 850 is of '93~'95, you can manually retrieve codes from the OBD-I terminal in the engine compartment. However, if '96~'97, you will need an OBD-II scanner. Visit local auto parts store, such as AutoZone for free diagnosis.
If the problem persists even after clearing the codes, the engine may as well need a good tune-up. I'll copy & paste my previous post:

ROUTINE TUNE-UP ITEMS:
*1. Spark Plugs (Genuine Volvo or Bosch Platinum is a good choice, I use Bosch Platinum).
*2. Plug Wires (French Bougicord is the OEM, Bosch makes them as well but I went with the OEM).
*3. Distributor Cap & Rotor (Bosch is the OEM).
*4. Air Filter (MANN is the OEM).
*5. Fuel Filter (Bosch is the OEM).
*6. Serpentine Accessory Drive Belt (Continental Tech is the OEM). Longer belt is recommended.
7. Tyre Rotation (watch out for the rotation direction arrow on the sidewall).
8. Exterior/Interior Light Bulbs.
9. Checking for Transmission Fluid Level.
10. Checking for Power Steering Fluid Level.
11. Checking for Brake Fluid Level.
*12. Checking for Coolant Level (must not be at MAX mark when cold, it has to be about the middle between MAX & MIN). Should you decide to replace coolant, use high-quality coolant and avoid cheap/generic brands. I use Prestone, as Volvo genuine coolant was $20/gallon.
*13. Checking for the Condition of Battery (Do multimeter test & S.G test).
---END OF COPY---
*Engine tune-up items. Also, check for PCV system, cracked vacuum hoses, air intake ducts, correct alternator operation, as well as cleaning the throttle body. Don't forget to add a large bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner.
Please provide us with a bit more info, such as:
1. Is your 850 turbo or non-turbo?
2. Does your car have maintenance record/history?
3. When was the last time a good tune-up had been done?
4. How many miles does your car have?
5. Any other abnormal engine behaviour?
Update us, please.

1) '95 turbo 116,800 miles (paid $3750 almost a year ago)
2) not sure i plan on doin alot of maintenance this summer. i.e timing belt, tranny flush
5) No just the idle
Yes, you can retrieve codes via OBD-I. Clear codes first and see what the ECU tells you. If the devices the ECU reports are fine and there is no obvious defects in the engine compartment, it may be a time for a good tune up.

Having the same problem in the T5R I just bought. A couple times the idle just dropped and it got rough and then stalled. Started right back up, but was not running very smooth until I gunned it a little and then it was OK. Did this a couple times then ran fine. I have paperwork saying it just had a tune-up recently where the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor was replaced. Mabye I will pull one of the plugs and see what kind was used. If they are not Volvo, I'll buy a set from the dealer.
