I'm trying not to break it...

I am in the process of replacing the evaporator in that sedan I sold. I really don't want to break anything and have to run around town trying to fix it, the dealer hear really sucks. They don't carry a lot of stuff and charge frieght on ordered parts, not to mention they tell you to wait a week to get it, then offer you express shipping.
Anyway, I need to get the heater hoses off that go from the engine bay to the firewall. Tech said to squeeze the plastic tabs then pull them out, that isn't seeming to work for me. What do you squeeze them with? Squeeze them into the line? How hard should I pull?
After they are loose, will I loose antifreeze?
I was hoping that someone with heater core replacement experience could help me with this. I was surprised that HEATER CORE REPLACEMENT instructions are NOT in the DIY sticky.

Part of my deal was to replace the evaporator. I was planning to do it next week anyway so the timing was fair.
Oh, turns out that my heater core coupling was broken and would not release. I had to finish breaking it and get new connectors.
Also, I was going to replace the speedo gear since the dash was out but taking the dash out doesn't make that job any easier.
