installing new headlights
ok, they're here, im exciting. i go abouts taking out the stock lamps. 10mm wrench did just fine. after the lamps were out, i compared the two. i noticed when the new ones first got here, there was a major difference in how the bulb is in the unit.
on the factory headlamps, removing the bulb is as easy as turning it, and pulling it out, and disconnecting from the clip-on wire harness. the new ones, have no harness, have no 'screw in' type securing base. all i see is this silver ring, with 2 metal pieces in front of the bulb hole. the opening for the bulb is drastically smaller, to where the bulb itself will not fit thru it. almost seems as if i have to take the bulb apart, and re-assemble it with this peice in the middle of it. (apologies for the size of the images, but smaller images would make it less clear) this is the factory headlamp, with the bulbs removed, but still clipped into the harness. the yellow and brown wires are both going to the bulb itself. http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/4343/old10kf.jpg a closup of the factory bulb securing unit http://img343.imageshack.us/img343/7817/old25kd.jpg now, this is the new headlamp, and you can see its way different. the yellow and white wires hanging out, i assume, are to connect to the bulb. the brown wires, are connected to the silver piece, as to make a part of the connection (ground wire?). this is what made me think i had to take the bulb apart and reassemble around this part. i really dont want to have to do that. http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/7348/new15mv.jpg close ups of the new one http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/5097/new24bs.jpg http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/4290/new34kz.jpg also, i have no idea what those 2 wires are, in the black sheath, are. not on the old unit, and theres no wires for them around where the headlight sits. any ideas here on how im supposed to connect it? the website gave no information, the package came with no instructions (or even bulbs for that matter, which i was not happy about at $700 ) any help would be greatly appreciated - i have 2 days untill the car must be mobile for work, would like to have these in asap. edit: i did think to clip the yellow and brown wires, and re-attach to the harness from the original lamps, which would solve the bulb connection issue, however, there would be no way of keeping the bulbs in place. the silver ring is my main concern. if i took it out of the way (only 2 screws hold it in, easily removed with magnetic screwdriver), the bulbs would simply 'dangle' in the openings. edit2: i did discover what the 2 extra wires are from the headlamp unit. they connect to the turn signals. looks like the turning bulb is connected to the 5 LED's in the center of the new lamp unit. http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/657/light8ru.jpg this will look outstanding, once i get it all together [:@] also with this image, you can see the bulbs in place, WITH that silver ring |
RE: installing new headlights
The setup on the new headlights are for different bulbs. The new ones will take A H7 bulb like the one in the link. You unlock the metal wire looking thing and install the bulb and relock. The 2 wires will go to each bulb. Im not sure which is which though. You will have to try to trace with a test light to the wires with it hooked up.
Sorry I wish I could help more but thats all I know. http://www.eautoworks.com/html/ORD-1-1-1-38129.cfm |
RE: installing new headlights
As a suggestion re: H-7 bulbs, let me suggest that you purchase Sylvania Silverstar. They are appx $30.00 for a pair but make a huge difference in vision. I have found them in WalMart stores.

RE: installing new headlights
ok, tech, some clerification - when you say the 2 wires will go to each bulb, do you mean, the white/yellow will go to the corresponding bulb, and the brown stays attached to where it is, or there is 2 wires for 'each' bulb? the only free wires per bulb is a white one for low beams, with an open connection piece at the end, and the yellow one for the hi beams.
edit: also, is there different bulbs for the low and hi beams? i purchased new bulbs for my factory setup, silverstar's at autozone, for $72 for all 4 (low/hi). one is 9006, the other is 9005. is it a universal bulb for both, or is there different bulbs for hi and low? |
RE: installing new headlights
Im not 100% positive about the wiring but you should be able to figure out most of it easy with a test light.
This is what I think. By looking in the picture it looks like the brown might go to one side of the bulb for ground. The for the other side white will be on one bulb and the other will be yellow. Example: Not 100% sure so bear with me. High beam might be brown for ground and yellow for power.Low beam will be brown for ground and white for power. If I was there I would be able to tell you easy. Also can you see inside the light on both to compare wire colors from one to the other? As far as the Info from the site I posted the link for both high and low are both H-7 bulbs. Hopefully something I said will help you. |
RE: installing new headlights
your helping tremendously! :D
reg, i totally agree with the silverstar. i had placed the silverstar dim bulb on my driver side, and left the stock on the passenger side. i can tell the difference from the driver seat, and by looking at the front end. those silverstar bulbs make my normal, yet brand new, bulbs look like old dish water. im on my way not to the autoparts place to change out the 9006's and 9005s for those bulbs, i hope they have silverstar for that type of bulb also. my family doesnt shop at walmart, but i'll look around other places, and go there only as a last resort to get the bulbs. thx for the tips! *pictures soon* |

RE: installing new headlights
ok, after another trip to get the new bulbs, they only had 3 of the 4 i needed, so ordered it to come in tomorrow. got home, and *tried* to install the H7 bulbs. not working. so finally, out of frustration (2nd set of bulbs), i drive my volvo with no headlights or turnsignals to the parts place, and ask him what i am doing wrong. he looked at the piece, looked at the bulb. wrong bulb. he informed me that i need the H1 bulb instead. the colored wire connects to the bulb, the brown wire is the ground.
i have come up with a neat little saying for bulb wires, maybe you'll like it - similar to "righty tighty, lefty loosey".... : *ahem* white is bright, yellow is mellow, brown as the ground" what do you think? [8D] anyways, they only had 2 of the 4 i need to install, so swapped the ones i had for what they got in store, and the other 2 will be in tomorrow. for now, i just put one bulb in each unit, as the dim light. i dont have brights, for say the highway, but i can still drive at night without a ticket. also, i was wrong about the LED's also. they're just running lights, nothing to do with the blinker (except that is where they draw power from). they look very sharp, will have pictures later today. i need to wash it first [:'(] |
RE: installing new headlights
I tried but I had the wrong bulbs!! SORRY[sm=headbang.gif]

RE: installing new headlights
AWESOME eventually these are what I want to get for mine.
http://www.mustangtuning.com/prhe8.html Mine are only like $225.00. |
RE: installing new headlights
that will definately clean up the front end of a mustang!
they look like the new style headlights, like off the ford pickup ( a friend has the short sport edition ). one thing ive heard of before, with mustang cosmectics, is removing the horse from the front... i dunno how it looks, never seen it, but i wonder how it would look with a mesh racing/street style grille covering the nose opening, where the horse is.. hrm.... also heard of somebody puting the ferari horse on instead  |
RE: installing new headlights
2 Attachment(s)
Mine doesn't have the Horse. It just has the Blue oval!!
Alot of people take the oval out and install the horse. The bad thing is I really have no grill. It is all part of the bumper cover. Attachment 24809 Attachment 24810 |
RE: installing new headlights
aahhh, ok
well, maybe if your planning on a paintjob or body work in the future, can just saw that crossbeam off that has the ford oval? besides the mesh area (would probly have to be hand cut, ive seen somewhere that you can get some by square feet) adding a street intimidation factor, it *may* help with the cooling, having a larger opening up front of the radiator. the drawback, i think, would be highway miles, rocks would probly plow right thru it, since its just above dead center of the front wind resistance. edit: or, as i look at it again, maybe even swapping front bumpers with say, a 93 or 94ish style? if its the years im thinkin of, has a similar opening up front. the stang that has the 3 bubbly style taillights? probly have to cut some out of the middle to shorten the length, i dunno honestly. edit2: yep, the 94 is what im thinkin of. this is a cobra, but same basic body style http://www.mustangsmustangs.net/ford...htred_w7_2.jpg this is a cobra, but same basic body style http://www.mustangsmustangs.net/ford...v_yellow_1.jpg http://www.mustangsmustangs.net/ford...cs.94-98.shtml |

RE: installing new headlights
Sometime in the future but not sure when I will have it painted. Need to save up alot of money for it.
Im broke so the paint waits,The clutch waits,The radiator waits. Which means the car is now parked!! But I like being different and standing out. Not sure if you could see it in the pic. But I drilled holes in the fenders and installed S80 fender lights in my car. Then connected them to the blinkers. I had Yellow neons on there but only have one left. They got broke one by one over the years. Also have to change the color of the interior to black and blue. I have APC racing seats in there now. The interior now is black and red. I have a long way to go. |
