Default Just bought a 850 T5R Manual, need some advice.

Hey guys,

New to the forum and looking for some advice.

I just bought a Volvo 850 T5R Manual and there are a few things that needs some attention and I thought this would be a good place to ask.

The throttle is a bit stuff, I'm pretty sure I narrowed it down to being a little black piece of plastic broken on the end of the throttle cable. So it's creating friction.

My drivers power seat tilt doesn't work, but all of the other controls do.

My heater doesn't seem to come on when I first start the car in the morning. After the car is warmed up if the car is restarted, it comes on if I leave it blowing at about half. If I crank it, it may turn off until the next time the car is started.

When driving from a stop, if I start in 1st gear, I can't accelerate in first and change to second very quickly smoothly. Does it harm the car or clutch to rev a little higher and start from a stop in 2nd?

The fog light switch doesn't seem to turn them on. Might be the bulbs.

I love the car though. It's a beauty.

That is all that I can think of right now. Please get back to me guys.

1. Try cleaning the throttle body. You could also disconnect the cable and see if the cable moves smothly.

2. https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-850-16/850-seat-back-cable-repair-16364/

3. Is the blower motor stopping or just no heat coming out of the vents?

4. What happens when you try to accelerate fast?

5. Check for power at the foglights.

When I accelerate quickly the turbo kicks in and I go fast.

One thing I forgot to mention is when I take my foot off the gas pedal it usually takes about a second for the rpms to start dropping (decelerating). Is that normal?

So it's easier to shift if I take my foot off the gas, wait a second, then hit the clutch and shift.

Maybe my car isn't a T5-R. It's an 850 Turbo R?

No such thing. Either Turbo, T5, T5-R, or R.

Oh man, Haha. Someone stuck an R emblem on your car. That's not an R anything, that's an 850 Turbo. Actually, where are you located?

And what type of interior do you have? Seats/wood grain/door sills? Does it look like this?

If not, then you just have a manual 850 Turbo.

And when you say your shifting problem. Do you mean you let off the gas, have to wait a little bit, then push the clutch in to shift?

Okay, then it's just an 850 turbo. It looks like that but it doesn't have the wood. What bastages. Oh well, I knew nothing about volvo's until I bought this car a week ago.

Yes, if I push in the clutch right away it revs itself up because it's like my foot is still on the pedal for a second before it starts to drop in revs.

Ok on the blower motor stopping it might be the blower motor resistor.

The RPM's usually hang a little when you shift gears.

They really are fun cars to drive.

It's hanging for like 2-3 seconds sometimes when it gets warmed up. Is that normal?

Also, it takes quiet a while for the engine to get warm. Idling for about 10 minutes today didn't raise the temperature gauge at all. After driving for about 15 mins it starting warming up.

Have you actually looked under the hood to see the turbo? Cos, you know - it might just be a GLT, with Turbo R badges...

This was what I was thinking. Take a picture of the engine bay and post it up so we can see.

Well, if it's an 850, then it should have a turbo gauge if it's a turbo. But if it's starting cold, I don't think a few minutes of idling with completely warm up the engine. Would an NA take longer to heat up than a turbo?

Kind of normal one thing I have always hated about the stock manual tranny cars.

Mine only does it cold then it better when it warms up. But mine is a Manual tranny car that still has an Automatic ECU.
