HI all,
I have been reading the old posts on knock sensors and the nice diagrams provided but something is not clear.

It says nothing about pulling the manifold, it only says that you need to gain
access to knock sensor(s) by removing upper charge air cooler pipe and
engine cooling fan. To gain access to rear knock sensor also remove
intake manifold support bracket.
It also show both knock sensors in the front. I know on the S70 it has one sensor on the front and one on the back of the manifold with the starter (nice location).
So I need clarity please, if I just full the air cooler pipe, fan, and intake support bracket will I gain access to the front sensor????![Confused](https://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif)
Thanks in advance for responses.

I guess no one try to go that route because KSs are usually clubbed with the PCV job and its much more easier to pull the manifold off (as compared to pulling the fan out and making all the possibility of some bad connection resulting in intermittent no-starts or rough idling etc.) and get a very clear access to do any repair or maintenance in that area.
The other way to check that is if you get under the car an dhave a look at the sensors, you should be able to get a fairly good idea of if the job is doable that way or not. I don't own a volvo for now so can't do this first hand.![Frown](https://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Good luck,

I have tried to get to the knock sensors without removing the manifold and let me tell you, it would be a lot more work. From the looks of things, you would have to remove the fan and radiator just to get to them from the bottom or the top. I would just pull the manifold, especially if you have a 96 or newer car without EGR. If you end up needing the knock sensor kit, you can find it here.
