Limp Mode!

Limp Mode!
I hate these two words. I bought a '97 850 in June and within 5 weeks it was in "limp mode".
I took it to a mechanic who said there was something wrong with the switch near the gear shift that can change from Econ to Winter to Sport, etc. Assuming it was just spillage from a beverage he cleaned it out and all was well... for about 24 hours.
I took it back to have him look at it again. This time he told me the switch needed to be replaced and I agreed to have the part ordered. All was well for another 24 hours after that repair. LIMP MODE AGAIN.
Being extremely frustrated but humble and respectable I called to take my car in again. Stressing I don't have time for keep bringing my car in for repairs, that I needed to do some traveling that required a reliable car I needed a thorough inspection of what could be triggering this "LIMP MODE" - Apparently this was Neutral Safety Gear Selector?.
I shelled out the money to have this replaced and the car was good for about 28 miles until it was back in limp mode again.
I really do like the people who have been repairing my car so I can't say that they're taking advantage of me and it's quite possible I just have a car that needs some major work done. However, I was hoping there was someone out there who might be able to relate to my issue. What could possibly be triggering my limp mode to turn on? Can I turn this feature off? It's becoming too expensive for me. Is there anything my mechanic could be over looking? Should I go to another mechanic? HELP!
