Looking 2 buy
Hi everyone, I am new to your forum. My wife and I are looking to buy a '95 850 turbo wagon but he only has one key, how much is a new key? Are the keys coded? I have already searched your forum for my answer and found pricing from $35 to $300. So which is it?
Also is there anything we need to know? What to look for? The A/C wasnt working so I brought a can of R-134 and threw that in on the test drive and it took it and got cold. (I didnt tell the seller I did it)
My Blizzaks will fit this car, which makes me happy. It runs and drives great. The cover on the tailgate is loose, the drivers sun visor wont stay up and we cant figure out how to work the 3rd seat.
The trip computer is nice, what kind of MPG can we expect?
Thanks guys.

RE: Looking 2 buy
I too have recently bought an 850 turbo wagon with somewhere around 200k miles on it. It only came with one key but I have been told that a new one can be cut for approximately $25 at the Volvo dealership. From what I understand the key can only be cut at a dealer because of the particular method they use, laser cutting.
My 17 year old daughter has been driving the car the most and is getting around 25 mpg combined city/hwy driving. Not bad for a teenager who as her driving instructor told me seems to have a lead foot. Probably wasn't a good thing for us to get a turbo car for her!!
Our A/C is not working either. Probably needs parts worth as much as the car and was told that it is likely not worth having fixed.
As far as the loose cover and the problem visor I can't help much except to say that I check E-bay frequently and see the visor's on there quite often.
Good luck

If you want AC and you had to put R134A in to get it to work that would be a bigger concern than only getting one key. These cars are known to have the evaporator go out and it's about $1500 to get them replaced. I know I have had two done and my son in law did his own. He is a mechanic and never did it before and it took him an entire weekend. He works real fast too when he does stuff. You can read tech's writeup on changing the evaporator stuck on top of this forum. My daughter and son in law got their 95 850 turbo wagon for $3,000 knowing that the evaporator was bad and that he would do it himself. If they would have had to pay somebody else to do it, they would not have bought the car for $3,000. They ended up putting about $1400 into it with tires, evaporator and many other things that were wrong. Figure it's a pretty good car for $4500 and that was about a year ago. Had about 135K on it if I remember correctly.

He was asking $2600 for it two weeks ago, he just dropped the price to $2500. We drove out and test drove it, it needs a GOOD detailing, a fuel door and the cover on the tailgate tightened.
The rubber is fair on the front but good on the back and the tires all match. This thing will lay rubber for half a block, my 7 yr old daughter loved that but not my wife, lol.
We offered him $2100 he said no less than $2300 so we walked away. We talked it over last night at I just shot him a e-mail and agreed to his $2300.
After we drove his car we drove a '97 850 sedan non-turbo and it wasnt as nice as this '95. Looked on ebay, craigslist, m-live, edmunds, cars, autotrader, autorv, you get the point, nothing that we like, in our price range or it has too many defects.
We are kicking ourselves because the car is 40 miles away and even though our Discovery gets decent MPG it doesnt come close to the 850, so now we have to drive another 80 miles to go and get the car. Oh well, hind sight is 20/20 right?

The I30 that I had had a coded key and the cost was $100 at the stealer, the used car lot that I bought it from paid for the key, but this is a private seller so I didnt want to get stuck buying a $100+ dollar key for a car that I am spending more on than I wanted to in the first place.
We will drive this car forever, so it will be worth it, but still...

That's a very good price for an 850 Turbo wagon if even fair condition. Good move to buy it even if you do have to put a little more money into it. My daughter drove an NA too when we were looking for hers. It was in quite a bit better shape and the prices was the same. They opted for the turbo also.
