Lost power while driving. Any ideas?
Hi,
Just bought my 93 850 GLT.
Was driving home, going about 55-60 mph, when I felt it start to lose power. No lights on the dash, no indication anything was wrong, just the feeling of losing rpm's.
I pulled over to the side of the road, and as I did that, the transmission kicked HARD into gear, and then the car really did sputter and die...all the lights on the dash kicked on.
I turned off the key, and immediately restarted the car, and it started rough, but it started. I ran it a minute, and then pulled back out onto the highway, and drove it 55-60mph all the way home, with no more issues.
Any ideas? It wasn't overheating, the engine was not making any funny noises...nothing that would indicate anything was wrong, other than suddenly losing rpms.

This happened to me and it eventually turned out that my fuel pump went bad. I guess what happened was that fuel was completely cut off to the engine and I got the flashing lights and loss of power steering. Basically my engine shut off while my car was still on. I'm guessing the hard shift was due to a significant difference in crankshaft speed and the speed of the gear. All kinds of funny stuff happen when your engine loses power so the shift is surely just a result of the engine. I don't think the transmission is the problem here.
From the symptoms and the code:
2-3-1 .. Adaptive HO2S Control, Engine Running Too Lean At Part Load
i would agree; sounds like your engine basically ran out of gas.
So the question is why? Since it's obviously intermittent, we should suspect electrical components. It could be a lot of things (fuel pump nearing the end of its life, obstruction in fuel filter, loose connection somewhere, etc.) but if i were a betting man, i would put my chips on the fuel pump relay.
How many miles on this ride? Been tuned recently?

Very interesting.
Similar thing happened to me, when I bought my 94 last week. Just 20 miles after I left the dealership, I stopped to pay a toll and the car wanted to die on me (very rough idle). Pulled it it Park and it was fine, shifted to drive and same thing. It only happened this time. I've driven the car for another 700 miles after that and it hasn't done it again.
Could it simply be from sitting too long at the dealership?
