Default Maintenance needed at 150000

Hi.My wife has a 1995 Volvo 850(non turbo) that I'm giving my son. She has been good about the scheduled maintenance but I wondered what I should have looked at and worked on before I give it to him. It has 150000 miles. Also, anyone know of a good Volvomechanic in the Salt Lake City area. I've been told I should have the timing belt replaced, the radiator and transmission flushed and filled, oil change. Any other thoughts? Thanks

See the other thread that is new here and look at the recommendations there. If timing belt not done in last 70K or five years, DO IT NOW.

Hi, welcome to the forum, I hope you find it helpful & enjoyable.

>I've been told I should have the timing belt replaced, the radiator and transmission flushed and filled, oil change.

The above items indeed need replacement. I would also replace brake fluid, serpentine belt (unless it's not too bad), have the brakes inspected, have a good tune up if not done for a while. Whatever you replace, insist on OEM parts. If you can find a shop that specialises in Swedish/European makes and is willing to accept parts from customers, here's a good vendor many of us here use often:

Please refer to other basic questions in the following thread:

Good luck,

150K is a nice number for changing the timing belt tensioners, along with the timing belt.

I agree. I would buy a kit of belt, tensioner pulley, idler pulley plus hydraulic tensioner (the hydro tensioner may be ok as long as it's not leaking oil).

I agree. However, Volvo water pump seems to last quite a long time, and if it's not leaking, you may be able to defer it. Mine was seeping at about 140,000 miles/12 years so I replaced it. I used a pump made by HEPU-German, but I think genuine Volvo is probably better.

I would also consider replacing all PCV components, cleaning the throttle body + EGR valve.

From my list when ours hit 150K (has 178 on it now)

Change oil and filter, air filter (clean flame trap) fuel filter, spark plugs, plug wires, flush transmission, replace timing belt, all timnig pulleys/rollers, and tensioner, serpentine belt, rollers, and tensioner, water pump, thermostat, coolant, and as long as your in there relapce both upper and lower radiator hoses and consider the heater hoses as well. Flush and bleed the brake fluid, rotate the tires (Checking the brakes, rotors and brake hoses for wear) and align the headlights and front end if needed.

That should cover you for many thousand more miles. I know the list sounds like a lot and maybe it is, but my son is driving the car and I want to do everything I can to avoid a "Hey Dad" call at 1 in the morning.
