Unfortunately these 850's didn't have cut off systems like a lot of the newer cars. Volvo has a tendency to think their owners are smart. I think I'm going to crank it over by hand this morning. Then drop some oil in it and see if she fires up. If it's quiet (which I would be shocked) I'll do a compression test.

I went and started the car today. I think it has a "spun" bearing. After running several minutes it still has noise in the lower end. I also pulled some metal off the drain plug.
After I started it and let it run about 5 minutes, I shut if off and changed the oil and filter. This time I put in some full synthetic. Cranked it back up and let it run for about 30 minutes. I drove it around a little, it has no power but it is also running "open loop". What causes that?
Here is the link to the project video's. I'll run a compression test on it within the next couple of days.

That's a bummer the engine is toast. Sometimes you could luck out with no damage. For example, my mother in law ran her '96 Isuzu Rodeo out of oil and overheated it, which in turn blew the water pump. She drove it until the motor locked slam up. It would not crank at all after it shut off. I put it up in the air, hung myself off of a long breaker bar with a pipe on it (extra leverage) and broke it free. Replaced the water pump and timing belt, changed the oil, and over 15,000 miles later, she's still driving the damn thing. I showed her how to check the oil as these Isuzu motors use TONS of oil.

Well, I went to Memphis then to Dallas a few weeks ago to find a motor for this R. The guy that I have been helping with his '95 850 base seems to want it pretty bad. He doesn't seem to believe that the R will be a different beast, like putting a jetpack on a turtle.
Found a wrecked 850 Turbo in Dallas with 192,000 miles on it. The car seems to have been taken care of a little so I did a manual compression test on it and came up with 90 - 95 across the board (hand cranking) so I pulled and purchased it, then dragged it home, and delivered it to the guy that will install it. I don't have a lift nor the time to deal with it myself.
Started the car to try to drive it to the installer, 35 miles away and the car made it about a block to the gas station and the motor locked up. So we had it towed to the mechanic to have it installed. I ordered several parts from iPd to help with the motor swap. Throttle body intake, turbo coolant tube, PCV system, etc., dropped those parts off while I was on my way moving west.
Checked on the car a couple of days ago and the mechanic said it was ready to go and running very strong.
The new owner picked it up yesterday and could not stop telling me how fast his new car is. Couldn't get him off the phone and he was in it less than 20 minutes. I spoke to him again today and he actually said that he's a little afraid of the car because it's so fast and doesn't seem to have a limit. I just laughed and told him to take it easy.
Hurrah!!! A R saved. It cost the new owner about $2,500.
