Unhappy My Front Mud Flaps Are To Long...

I'm trying to get my '95, 850 R, Yellow in tip top shape and decided that I had better get some mud flaps to protect the sides of the car ASAP. Stuff is slinging all over the car. Anyway, I go to the local Volvo Junk Yard and see none on the 850's there. So off to the stealership I go. I order the flaps and borrow a rivet gun to install them. Man they look good.

The 1st time out of the driveway I hear something, and figure out that it's my mud flaps. Wow, they scrapped??? My drive way is level and I live on a level street. Strange... Well after a couple of weeks of driving the car I learn that the front flaps are to close to the ground. They drag over speed bumps, they drag when I hit dips in the road, they drag over there, and they drag over here.

So, I ask around and find out that my NEW flaps from the stealership are 2" (two inches) longer than the flaps on a car just like mine. Man, that is strange. I go to the stealership and they won't talk to me without a receipt. So I go dig that up and they say they will look into it and order new ones for me. A few minutes later I jump in front of a few cars , take the next exit and have to brake hard in a curve and guess what, you got it, the darn flaps drag again, in a braking curve. Wow!

The next day I check and they tell me that I put the flaps on the wrong location. I installed the back flaps on the front and the fronts on the back, I think... no way. So when I stop the car I take a peek. No way is right. Because of the contour of the car that is not possible. So I call them back and tell them what I think and they say they will see me when they get the new flaps. So, today I go by the stealership and they show me another set of rear flaps that I refuse to take. I then drag the parts department guy out to the car to show him and he tells me that he doesn't think he can help me. He can only get the parts that the computer allows him to order.

I then tell him that he needs to get with Volvo and get this straight and he acts as if it is not possible. I then tell him that he needs to refund my money for the flaps that drag the ground. He says, take them off and we will refund them. I say, no no no, if you want them back, you take them off, But I want my money back either way. It is not my fault you guys can't sell the correct parts. I'm not spending my time, effort, money taking those flaps off, you can do it. He looks at me like I'm crazy and says, well, I don't think you are going to get your money back then. I say, I need to see the manager, owner, or anyone else above him. He says he will check. He goes in the back of the department and I hear him telling some guy what I said, like I was trying to be an a** or mean or something. Then the guy tells him to give me back my money. When he came up to the counter, I tried to explain to the guy that I did not want my money, I want mud flaps that fit. At that point all he wanted to do is get rid of me so he said he could not help me and gave me my money.

So, I'm a little different so I call VOLVO OF NORTH AMERICA. The lady that I spoke with there told me that my only hope was to work it out with a parts department dealership. THE NEXT CLOSEST ONE IS 160 MILES AWAY!!! Then I explain to her that I HAVE FREEKIN 3 OLDER VOLVOS, ARE ALL OF THE PARTS GOING TO ONE DAY NO LONGER FIT AND THEY NOT GIVE A TOOT?

Will someone here please calm me down before I go get rid of all 3 of these cars for FORDS.

Ok...I am going to go on a whim and say that I was laughing because the parts dept. at the dealer I went to 2 weeks ago looking for a part and the guy told me that he couldnt look it up unless I had a part number. Iwas just looking for the new Volvo Iron logo that goes on the newer cars so I could update mine. The mudflaps you got from your stealer., did you by chance keep the package and/or receipt. If you get me the part number I will check with the stealer I go to in occasion and check with them see what they say.. They seem to be good so far so I will check with them....In the meantime, drink a beer and cool down man!

if you are still looking for mud flaps, try ebay if you haven't already. that is where i usually end up getting my stuff from.

also talk to other members and see if there is a volvo close by in a junk yard that they could get them for you.

I checked ebay for him already! No oem. I had my Stealer (The Volvo Store) dropship my rear 850 mudflaps to my house for 22 bucks total since they didn't have them in stock! So for oem, u can't go wrong with that price!

OK, here is the deal. Unless a stealership has a set that has been sitting there for a long time, they will likely get them shipped in. If they get them shipped in, they will be messed up like the ones I have, to long. Tech's flaps are 14-1/4", my new flaps are 16-1/4". That is from the top of them to the bottom of them.

The guy at the stealership here claims the part #'s are universal for the front / rear etc. Whatever!!! Here are the part numbers that I have:
- Mudflap Kit, Front, 9184645-1. They cost $51.06 (after dealer mark up).
- Mudflap, Rear, 3542924-0. They cost $43.34 (after dealer mark up).

Somthfrce must have gotten them at dealer cost.

Once upon a time I was in the military and worked in an office called "Deficiency Analysis". What I did was process reports from the workers that had suggestions to make things easier, or submit manufacturing corrections. Sometimes the companies that makes things for the military would mess up the specifications and ship bad parts. Once the military workers got the bad parts, they would usually re-order the parts and when they realized they were the same messed up parts, they would modify them to work. When they got tired of modifying the parts to work they would submit a form for me to forward to the proper channels to get the manufacturer to STOP making the messed up part and get it right.

I believe that is the situation here. Someone simply needs to contact the manufacturer and tell them to stop making the flaps 16" and cut them down to 14". Simple as that, just need someone willing to do a little work to make the call.

Yes I did check with eBay. Also, I am fortionate enough to have a VOLVO GRAVE YARD just 35 miles from my house. They probably have 70+ Volvos there and get more weekly. They also do servicing, sales, new parts, etc. Great group of people. There is another independant Volvo specialist about 10 miles from my house but I thing those folks are NUTS! You call about a part and they say "yes we have it, come get it". You get there and they have you wait 30 minutes only to tell you that it's broke but still useable. If I wanted a broken part, I would keep the one I broke.

Then we have 1 stealership about 15 miles from my house. They will jack you ever time. They also do BMW's so they try to charge the Volvo people the BMW prices.

I'm headed to Charlotte NC next week. I'm going to make a long list of parts that I might need over the next 6 months and get them all from there just so the stealership here doesn't make any money from them. I might even drive my Jeep so I'll have more room for the parts, like a R spoiler

Ok, I called "The Volvo Store" here in Orlando. When I called jim in parts I had him first use TECHs part numbers. The left one is 25 bucks, the righ one is 32 bucks!, which makes no sence to have one more than the other. Then I looked up my receipt for when I ordered my "set" for my 850 and the price is $24.08 (part number 9124856-7) and that number is for a kit. 2 rear mudguards, and necessary hardware. I also had it drop shipped. So rspi, check your part numbers and if you want I can either call the Volvo store and order them for you if you want them! They fit my 850 perfectly or you can call them and see if they can drop ship them to you since you arent close to a Stealer. When I called, they didn't have the separates nor the kit in stock! Their number is 407-628-0550. Good Luck with the hunt!

Question Should I take the chance?

Well, I called the parts department (the stealer near me) and the guy said that these two part numbers combinded are the kit (two flaps - pair) that I ordered and received. So I'm thinking, if I order 1 of them and it comes in correct, I will have a good flap. If it comes in to long, I'm still where I am today. What do you guys think? Should I risk it?

IMO, it is up to you if you want them! If you want, let me measure mine to make sure they are the shorter ones.. If you end up wanting them,I could order them from our store here and when they arrive to the store I can measure them there prior to taking delivery or you can order them at your store with my part number and take the measurement prior to taking delivery.....either way its up to you!

Thanks a lot for checking that for me. I'm still a little afraid to order them since they do not have them in stock. It sounds like you got the rear flaps. I also got rear flaps and they fit perfectly. It's the fronts that are to long.

Also, your car looks very nice. Now I noticed something else missing from my car... I have the GLT front bumper spoiler like yours but mine is missing the rings around the fog lights. I did not realize that until I read where tech was mentioning it to the guy that works on Lula. Now I see what he meant. So, another decission ahead... Do I get the rings or wait until I replace my spoiler with the R spoiler. I think I'll wait, and maybe make some rings in the meantime.

As for the front flaps, I think I'm going to check my driving route to see if any dealer has them in stock. That way they can check the measurement and make sure they are 14" not 16".
