Is my tranny blown?
Ok it works great going forward....but
When I put it in reverse,it bangs pretty nice not real bad,but a little,if it idles it will go great no slipping shuddering.
As soon as I give it gas it shudders i guess a slight slip goes with it.It use to only do it when the wheel was turned...Now it does it when the wheel is straight. No codes, trans fluid is proper.
are their any other things to check besides the transd itself?is this common?
Anyone ever rebiuild one?
RRRRRR this bites
o yea,it shudders at the right front tire.

Well I drove it around my streets in reverse for 10 minutes
After it passes the initial shudder it dont really slip, unless you give it alot of gas it shudders again.
tHEN i HAD SOMEONE GO FROM PARK/DRIVE/REV AND THE MOTOR DONT DANCE MORE THAN COUPLE INCHES MAYBE.
THE DEAD GIVEAWAY IS THIS.
I put it in rev, held the brakes, and gave it gas.
It shuddered and revved to 2k and stayed still.
That made me cry almost in sadness.
Now I have a few questions.
Is there anything in the drivetrain that could spin like that?Like some thing with striped teeth maybe??or some type of bearing setup ?
I think I tested the wrong pin for tranny.
Which is it?? for the trans test?
Im guessing it is the torque converter.

Hello Mr. dannydoo,
Greetings from Chiagoland.
I am not sure as to the symptom you're having. The car shudders only when shifted into reverse? And the shuddering stops at about 2,000RPM?
I don't mean to be skeptical, but are you sure the transmission fluid is at proper level & colour? The transmission fluid level check is a bit tricky, it has to be driven for about 15 min. or until it gets warm, then you go through all detents, stopping about a few seconds at each detent, then check to see if it's within "Normal Hot" range.
Sometimes transmission problem, especially slipping, can be corrected by adjusting the bands. Also, even a tiny bit of foreign object can clog fluid passages and cause trouble. If you already know these things, please disregard my advice.
The most serious case may be the clutches (yes, there are hydraulic clutches within automatic tranny) are worn out, which is very rare unless the car was really abused. I would double check the level/colour of fluids and if it's still normal, have a reputable shop (preferably a Volvo dealer or shops that specialize in Swedish cars only) try to adjust the bands (if 850 has adjustable bands). Or it could be as simple as loose cable links.
It would be helpful as to pinpoint the problem, if you could provide a bit more details.

JPN

The shudder is a vibrating shaking sound.I first noticed it did it only when the wheel was turned sharply in reverse.OR WHEN THERE IS PASSENGERS and/or wiegt
Like that,it would take more trans work to push the car,so i think it slipped.I think its a pressure thing.
mechanicly It seems to me like the pump isnt giving enough pressure. But why would 1234 work so perfectly then?
Also, after it shudders,in reverse and only in reverse,I continue to drive backwards uphill downhill light throttle its fine, but soon as i give it 1/2 throttle it shudders and slipps untill I let off a litttle bit.
I never seen a low fluid act like that,or low pressure act like that..something w/low fluid would slip nice and quiet.
Again Im guessing a torque converter.
Drive works perfect,sport/winter all that.
car stays at temperature all the time.dead smack in the middle of the temp guage.
Step on the brakes and give it gas in drive,it tries to pull nice and strong.Do it in reverse and you get the shudder and a weak pull.
Adjusting the band sounds like it could be something that needs to be done defintly.
Wish I knew the inner workings of this trans.
Does this trans have a filter that can be changed?

Hello dannydoo,
Thank you for the additional detail, I'm starting to get the picture.
If it's only the reverse that's causing the problem, then I believe the torque converter is ok. The problem seems to be in reverse gear only. Or more likely, the clutch for reverse gear may be slipping due to wear or mis-adjustment of the band. I am hoping that it can be fixed by adjusting the band. If it's the clutch, the repair bill would be quite ugly since it requires disassembly of the tranny unit.
I would not take the car to an average transmission shop. Automatic transmission is an extremely complex and precision machine, and one must be really intelligent to properly diagnose/repair it. This requires exhaustive reading & training, as well as experience, and many average transmission shops may not have such dedicated technicians (don't get me wrong, there must be a few, but in average, I wouldn't think there are many top-notch technicians at those shops).
I would definitely take the car to a local Volvo dealer or independent shops that specialize in Swedish cars only (must be difficult to find such shops, however). While dealers charge premium, the additional cost should pay off in the end, as other average shops may not be able to accurately diagnose the problem or make it worse.
Since the rest of the gears are working fine and the level & condition of the fluid seem normal, I assume it only needs adjustment for the reverse gear mechanism (band, loose cable linkage, etc...).
I am not sure as to filter/screen for the fluid (should have one, though). It may have plate-type filter, but if it's the filter that's causing the problem then the rest of the gears should be suffering as well.
I'll wait to see if other experts on this forum have better ideas than I do.
Best wishes,
JPN

Hey I have the same problem as you, except mine is worse. Tranny is fine in the forward gears, but when put it in reverse it will idle just fine, but the moment I give it any gas in reverse, I get a clunk and grind. Sometimes the car just dies after the clunk in reverse if I have to give it gas. Also my stupid lock-up keeps slipping out if I'm on a slight incline. The most annoy thing about the transmission is when I'm cruising at 55 mph, drop it into 3rd, and the RPMs drop to idle speed. Engine braking only works in L and below 25 mph. Yea I can see we both are going to have expensive bills coming our way.
Good luck, and be easy on the tranny, and you should be able to get a couple thousand more miles out of it.

Wait, is there a rattle when you're going slow?
Because my car has the same thing. When I'm accellerating from 0, the car seems to shudder/vibrate and once you are going 15, it'll stop.

OK Here is 2 awsome auto tranny pdf's verry usefull!
I need 1 helpfull body tho.
IN this first chart..Applied elements and position.
http://www.transtec.com/tech_insert/94659.pdf
It says what sprag ,selenoid ,brake band and clutchs are enguaged in each specific gear right?
If you look at reverse and 1st gear, they are both sharing the same brake band, clutch and sprag ,AM I right?
So if 1st is dead, then rev should be also and vice versa...RIGHT?? I mean mechanicly speaking.
Im having a reverse slipping problem, but its wierd,it dont slip like regularly,it grinds a little right at first as it slips, then it catches.
It feels like the driveshaft spline is stripped right around the tire area somehow,BUT ONLY IN HIGHER TORQUE APPLIED REVERSE SITUATION......IS THAT POSSIBLE????????
MY TRANS BANGS NICE INTO REV,IDLES IN REV AND GOES SMOOTH,If.i give it gaS DOWN A HILL IT WONT GRIND REALLY UNLESS I HAMMER IT.iF IM GOING UP THE HILL IT WILL GRIND AND SLIP WHILE IT GRINDS BUT THEN CATCHES .
Heres the other pdf.

If you cant read the files, just download free adobe acrobat reader,"below" they are tiny files and real fast self installed.

I have the same issue with the shuddering in reverse only. It will slip, then shudder, then catch. give too much gas and it shudders again.
Bottom line, I am not a mechanic. So has anyone repaired theirs? If so, how much did it cost? I have an 99 S70 AWD with 184,000.
