Default IS MY TURBO SHOT?

I was in town today and I noticed it was missing pretty bad and sluggish from 2500 rpm and up, so I watched my boost guage and let it build some boost and thats when the missing starts, when it builds boost and when I let off the gas it was putting out smoke and seemed like the smoke lessened on my drive home and then stayed constant but I could only see it after boost was built and I let off the gas. Any help is appreciated and does anyone know where I can get a rebuild kit if this is indeed the turbo.

Did you check your intercooler hoses for rips or holes?

If it was the piping I couldnt see it smoking like that unless from a rich condition but smoke looks like oil. Anyone else had experience w/ this? Not to knock the other reply though. The intercooler hoses look good.

How about tune up stuff when was the last time?

Most of the time when the turbo goes bad it will smoke at idle and be fine driving.

Just recently replaced timing belt, plugs and air filter. Plug wires are the ones that came on it ( I know they need changed along with cap and rotor) Could the wires, cap and rotor cause this? I know they could cause the missing, but what about the smoke that only occurs after boost is built? It starts missing right when the "boost guage" hits the white. Keep it out of boost and you can still feel a liitle miss but it is ten fold when in boost and only smokes after that and during a liitle. [sm=dontgetit.gif]

OK Tech tell me if this is possible. A few days ago when my cel came on one of the codes was the rear o2 sensor signal. The light came on today when this happened but I havent pulled the code again, but I would bet its the same code. My question is if the rear o2 sensor goes bad and is not working at all will the ecu kill the boost electronically, and that could cause a very rich or smoking condition right? Just a theory but im not that up to speed yet on the ecu boost controlled cars.

The cap rotor and wires could cause the Missfire. Then it would be running rich causing the black smoke. Also yes a bad O2 sensor as well. But also a missfire could throw the o2sensor code as well.

You are describing the common symptoms of leaking intercooler, vacuum, and/or master cylinder brake hoses. Weak hoses leak air under boost.

When the ignitor module of my 1984 Maxima started to become flakey last year, it caused my engine to run so rich that the engine wouldn't stay running. There was blue smoke mixed in with black smoke.

It is possible that you are losing fuel pressure under boost. However, the engine would buck, instead of a mild miss. Still, it wouldn't hurt to check fuel pressure.

If you are led to believe that your turbo has a problem...

Does your engine use more than 1/2 quart of oil per thousand miles?

Remove the turbo inlet hose between air filter box and turbo. Do you see oil puddled inside of turbo housing? Firmly pull on turbo compressor wheel. Is there a lot of slop and play in the turbo shaft?

Havent had time to pull check turbo for play or oil puddling and I havent looked for vacuum leaks yet. I pulled my codes and they were in this order 1-5-3, 2-4-1, 5-4-3, 4-5-4, 5-4-5, 4-5-5. I will go go over the boots and connectors though for good measure when i get some daylight and free time (240SX is taking up space in the garage) Thanks guys

You can use pump from cooling system leak-down test kit to verify that intercooler pipes/hoses hold pressure.

I would check the cap,rotor, and wires first then the O2 next.

If they are Volvo codes. I Forget the year.

153=Rear o2 sensor signal absent or faulty
241=EGR system flow fault
543=misfire emissions level atleast 1 cylinder
454=misfire excessive emissions cyl. 4
545=misfire cat converter damage atleast one cylinder
455=misfire excessive emissions cly. 5

Those are out of my Volvo book

Default RE: IS MY TURBO SHOT?

Thanks for the help guys I went back over my piping and found the top intercooler hose had a clamp on it but was half way off and I pulled it off by hand. I fixed it and the missing is gone but it still smokes at idle, then it will ease off and start heavily for about 5 seconds while driving just off and on nothing consistent. It is white smoke, I dont have any oil in the coolant or vise versa, but I cant place the smell of the smoke. It smells like raw gas, oil, etc. Any ideas on this? Thanks again guys.

Pulled the intake and found oil puddled in the turbo and the intake pipe. The turbo had side to side shaft play and ALOT of play back and forth. Probally or what fely like a 1/8" or so. It felt like it not an accurate measurement, when I pulled it all the way forward and pushed it back it made a metallic knocking noise when it was all the way back.

HUGE white clouds of turbo smoke Last night, HUGE. After filling up several neighborhoods with smoke, it stopped after about 1/2 hour. I was two hours from home, so it was worth trying.

Starting cold this morning , big clouds again. Is the turbo going bad (oil seals wearing) or something else? DO I need to get the turbo rebuilt?
