new person question here

Hello,
I am doing an engine swap from a wrecked 850 to my 1996 850 GLT, which has no compression in the # 5 cyl.
My question is when I have the engine out I am replacing the timing belt, but should I replace the tensioner and the both pullys as well as the water pump. The engine in the donar car seems to be ok the #5 plug seems a little wet, but not sure if its oil or carbon with some fuel added in. The car seems to be running a little rich when I start it, but I didnt run for too long since the radiator was damaged in the accident.
I just dont want to put too much into it if the engine is burning oil.

Thanks....Tom

How many miles are on the donor engine? The tensioner and the rollers should be replaced with every other timing belt - 140k, 280k, etc. The water pump is your call. I replaced one of mine at 210k and it was tearing itself apart internally. On the others I replaced the water pumps along with the other stuff at the 140k interval.

I am not sure since the car that I got the donar engine from also was a swap engine.
I am gussing around 170K, so I guess I should go ahead and spen the 300 bucks to do it all.
How hard is it to do all of the timing stuff and water pump with the engine in?

Thanks....Tom

It is a little challenging due the the limited clearances but it can certainly be done. It is much easier with the engine out of the car.

Yeah I guess I will break down and buy the kit from fcp groton and replace before I put the engine back in.
The kit is 296 dollars and has all of the parts.

Thanks....Tom

Before you place the order for the FCP "kit" be aware that you will get some Scan Tech stuff with it - like the tensioner. As much as I like doing business with Nick I don't trust Scan Tech for a valve stem cap on my tires, much less a tensioner that can destroy my engine when it craps out. For OEM parts that are likely even cheaper than the kit try Darryl Waltrip Volvo at 1-800-689-0021 and ask for Don or Jamie.

Hi Lee,
eeuroparts.com has Aisin, which they say is what Volvo uses.
I can get everything I need for around 300 dollars.
does this sound right to you?

Thanks....Tom

The original hydro tensioner is Aisin. When I ordered one from an on-line shop it was named Febi but the actual tensioner had Aisin engraved on it.

Is continental a good timing belt?

Thanks....Tom

The Continental belt is fine.

Continental Tech makes many OEM parts for Volvo, including the timing belt.
