New shoes for my 855
So i finally got my wheels and tires mounted and balanced and on the car - I'm pretty sure that I am now safe from any major snow storms.
Best part is the total investment: $540
$480 for all 4 wheels, shipped. Brand new - reconditioned.
$40 for the tires - 225/45/17 Continental ContiSportContact3 (less than 50 miles on them - used at tire rack for testing)
$20 for mount and road force balance.

I have the center caps, i just hadnt put them in yet when i took the picture. I was at my buddy's house when I put the wheels on and had left the caps at home.
Aftermidnight: who said my tint was legal?
Actually, if my tint were half as light (by percentage of light transmittance) as it is now, it would STILL be illegal in this state. Legal limit here is 35% and the tint on my windows is 16%. Whoops.

I really like the looks of 17s or even 18s. On the other hand, my 15" snows ride smoother than 16" Contis on Columbias. I need to go through the city (Manhattan and Bronx) to get out of NYC, where roads are terrible, and wife+kids complain about the jarrs. Besides, I have to think that suspension takes a big hit too. In the suburbs would have been a different story.
That's the dilemma I have now on my V90: I got OEM 15"(24-spoke), which I really hate, and I am about to buy new shoes too. I would spend $ 500 for new rims, plus $$$ tires to match. If I get 15s, it's kinda shame or waste to spend $$$$ and not get 16, or 17 or even 18s. If I decide to go with 15s, I might as well go with used Volvo 15", different flavor though, and keep my current ones for snows.
As opposed to 850T, V90 is not a performance wagon, it is rather a nice cruiser. Without offending anyone here with very nice wagons, I still think that a performance wagon is kinda like "not-here not-there". I think if I need to drive "spirited" I will go get a coupe or even a R sedan... Some people like sleepers tho. Boxpin's video beating a Camaro was hilarious....

I really like the ride of my 16" wheels & tires of my 960. It has Michellins.
Tint limits here is 25 on sides and 10 on the back. I was pulled over in NC and my tint was checked on my yellow T-5R and they claim it was 18. I told the guy to worry about NC residents and leave me alone. He wrote me a warning ticket, for what I don't know. My 850 has the sides only done, the back glass tint had a crease in it, I purchased the pre-cut pieces from an on-line source. I had the 960 done while in Albuquerque last spring on a dark overcast day for about $150, 35% all around. I drove the 850 one night and really couldn't see out of the car. LOL

Henry: This is where I got my wheels:
http://www.wheelsrims.net/volvo-inventory.html
They were pretty good to deal with, but impossible to get to answer the phone. I just placed my order online and the wheels showed up 4 days later. I think the wheels are reconditioned/remanufactured, but im not sure since the quality is every bit as good as a wheel you would buy from volvo. I have NO bad spots on them with paint or voids, and they're definitely not reproductions (of if they are, they're VERY good ones) and my guy that mounted and balanced my wheels said they were perfectly true, and better than he sees on most brand new wheels.
As for wet traction....I havent had a chance to find out firsthand yet, but my friend matt (who works for tire rack and got me these tires) said that they performed VERY well on the test track when they wet it down. He also sais that reviews from people indicate that they're good in the rain as well.
As for location: I am in Mishawaka Indiana, which is about 10 miles east of South Bend.

Your Conti model is different from mine. DWS model of Contis is probably the highest rated tire of all for traction (according to Tirerack). Hopefully yours are as good. Funny, I really had trouble in pouring and freezing rain from Cleveland to Toledo to South Bend.
How is the ride in 17s compared to 15s or even 16s? Especially going through rough roads (which you may not have them)...

I would also like something like these http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...2FBlack+Accent
17s or 18s. I guess airbags with low psi (35-40) might soften the jarrs.

I havent driven enough to say yet how it rides compared to the 16s...really i dont expect the ride to be THAT much different. Sidewall height of the 205/50/16 is 102.5mm, and sidewall height of the 225/45/17 is 101.25mm.
That's BARELY more than 1% difference. I question whether ANYONE could feel that difference.
It throws my speedo off a little bit, but oh well.
As for the continentals....there are literally almost 20 different styles of continental that they have available in that size. Some are definitely better than others, and yeah, id have LOVED to have gotten the DWS, but they didnt have any at the $40 deal.

And thats odd....I test fitted the wheels off my buddy's wife's C70 that has the 225/45/17 on them and they didnt rub at ALL which is why I went this route. I didnt notice any with the new wheels either. I'm running a 15 mm spacer in the back and BARELY clearing the fender well in the back, but im fine in the front. if i had any rubbing, I'd be rolling the fenders and solving that problem.
RSPI, are you lowered at all? that might make a difference.

Not lowered at all. My problems were at the insides. The 1st tire was torn up because a nut come off the inner splash guard and the splash guard was rubbing the inside edge of the tire. I'm not sure how long but I got a flat and looked only to find the belts coming out of the side of the tire. Then about 2 months later I notice the other side was low on air and found that tire torn up as well. Didn't see where it was rubbing but that forced me to part the car. Three out of 5 tires bad took me out. I've been driving the 960 every since. I'm real glad I like the 960. LOL
I have been running the Kumho Ecsta 205/45-17's. But I refuse to purchase another tire without a good warranty like at Sam's club. I want the Michelin Pilot Sports. They run about $200 each. I have already replaced 3 tires since I purchased the car. Sidewall damage has killed the other tires. Please don't get me started, crying about these low profile tires. I simply can't afford it. Haven't really worked a full day since Nov '09.
