New Volvo owner, acceleration issues, code P0410, flashing arrow on dash
Hello all,
I am on a similar forum for Ford owners so I have an understanding on how these work I think
I have read a ton of other threads, but being a newbie Volvo owner I wanted to get whatever answers I can on this thread so I can start doing some work myself. I'm savvy enough to probably screw things up, but have worked on all my other vehicles with success. Might take a me a bit to get the new lingo.
Basically I bought my bro-in-laws 97 Volvo 850. The car accelerates slow, shifts fine (maybe a tad clunky) and when I plugged in to check the codes only the P0410 was thrown. The flashing arrow is also constantly flashing. Besides replacing the brakes it's in, otherwise, great shape :/
My bro-in-law said the pnp switch might need to be adjusted as it is a newer part. I wasn't sure he was correct in his assessment.
Anyways, does anyone have suggestions on where to start for the slow acceleration and flashing arrow?

Check to make sure the car is not set in "winter mode" (ie the switch on the center console). This will tell the car to start in 2nd gear - ie the slow acceleration. The PnP switch is a sensor that detects where the shifter is located (PNP means Park/Neutral Position) and can/will give bad info to the tranny and throw codes when bad. The quick fix is to try the "shifter row" - turn the key on to unlock the shifter, then row quickly 20 times or so from Park to Lo to Park. The idea here is to rub up the contacts on the PNP switch to get it to play nicely again.
