Default odometer to fast!

I have a 95 850 glt non turbo. I drove home today from work which is 60 miles but the odom and trip odom. registered 91 miles. It is registering about 1.5x fast. The speedometer is accurate as I passed through the orange barrells it was dead on. I have the abs and tracs light on and know I need an abs module. I have read many post and can find anything like this. I know all about the bad odometers and have replaced a lot of them. Also the tires are stock 15' tires. Any ideas please let me know

Hi,

If you've replaced the odometer gear (the plastic one that is known to fail), then I am not sure what is causing such problem. The actual mileage is stored in the ECU so you can retrieve it.

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/cha...pic.php?t=6731

As to the ABS & TRAC module, there are a few vendors that repair & upgrade the unit (approx $100). Most places deal with only '95 or newer, so people who drive '93-'94 have to fix the box on their own but the trouble seems to be repaired by re-soldering.

Anyway, I believe the odometer on the dash is mechanical, so there may be something loose, stuck, etc...

I hope this helps.

Sorry, it doesn't seem to be a frequent problem otherwise it would probably be posted on this forum. Why don't you send a PM to Tech?

Good luck!

Hi,

Thank you for the great input, much appreciated.

I wonder if you could provide us with how you reprogrammed the ROM, as well as where it was located at (I'm assuming it was inside one of the ECUs)? This way, people will know what to do if this happens to them.

I'll add this to my personal database.

Thanks again,

Sorry for the delay, Just to let everyone know how I fixed the odometer. I work at a volvo dealership and have access to all of the computers and such. I used the volvo scan tool VST went into functions under electrical and selected option USA to reprogram the ic. I know this may not help you do it yourself, but if anyone has this problem at least you will know how to remedy it. By taking it to the dealer. I know that most of you dont like to hear that but with volvos sometimes there is no way around it. I hope this helps. I would just like to thank everyone in this forum for their kindness and very informative info.(especially TECH)It has helped me in my job and never ending curiousity of volvos. Thanks to everybody.

How the heck did this happen? That's actually kind of funny that you were going in KM lol.

Somebody at the ECU manufacturer must've had too much Absolut Vodka (if Swedish), Beer (If Bosch), or Saki (If Denso/Aisin).

Or, somebody at Gothenborg must've installed Euro/Asian market ECU onto the US marketvehicle by accident.

It is a mystery indeed...

b5254t and I both work at the same Volvo dealer. That problem with his OD had me curious also. Still have no idea why someone would do that unless they wanted to rack the miles up faster.

My guess is that the memory where the ECU configuration parameters are stored was somehow corrupted and it probably reset itself to factory default (kms). I write software for embedded devices and it happens all the time. In fact we force memory corruption situations in the lab to see how the system responds/recovers.

That could happen for many reasons: short circuit, cold solder, bad contact, electro static discharge during manipulation, bad voltage regulator, some other electrical component drawing too much current, etc etc.

Electronic components and printed circuit boards suffer after many years, especially in harsh environments with vibration, wide temperature range and irregular power supply.

Yes I am also curious as to how it got set to KM? I recently bought the vehicle and have no previous history on it. I am curious as to how long it was running like that, and the true mileage of it. I guess I will never know. But its a volvo so it should run 300 to 400k with know problem. Who knows maybe it made its way to canada and someone switched it to km but never back to miles upon return. Also if anyone wants to change their odom you can change ic to various different countries japan canada usa etc, haha.

Wouldn't ECU DTC 3-2-5 (ECU memory lost) cause this? I guess it would also zero the electronic odometer register.

Default odometer too fast

I know this thread is ancient, but I'm hoping that someone can help me with the same problem. I recently replaced the oil separator and the hoses associated with it as well as cleaned the EGR valve. I had to remove the intake manifold and spent several hours doing it. I can only assume that something happened when I cleared my codes and then disconnected the battery for some time.

I realized that the person that originally posted the thread mentioned 1.5 times the mileage. I had 530 "miles" to the last tank. Not possible. 530/1.6 is 330. 330 is about the amount of miles that I normally get from about a 15gallon tank. Did I change this somehow? I don't have the optional trip computer.

I also have a '95 volvo 850 glt non turbo with 160,000 miles. I also have a ridiculous amount of blow by. It is smoking out of the dipstick, filler cap and recently the pressure blew my valve cover gasket. I believe this car is on it's last leg. Any info is appreciated.
