Default Odometer Gear

Bought a new instrument cluster, a VDO, to replace my Yazaki cluster.

This new VDO cluster needs the odometer gear fix. No problem, seems easy enough and with the tutorial online here I feel confident on it.

Question is... can I take the gears out of my old cluster and put them in the new one to save the $50 of these parts? Looks like i'll want to replace both gears while i'm in there and each one is $25 each on both FCPGroton and odometergears.com.

Thanks for the help.

I dunno if you can or not. if they're the same size, etc, then i dont see why not. On the other hand, it IS a known problem that these things break, and you may as well replace them while you have them out and save yourself the headache of pulling it back out when they do go bad.

I lucked out - I was pulling bulb assemblies for a member on here when i saw an IPD sticker on the back of one of the clusters. Turns out that whoever owned that car did the gear replacement. I snagged them. Win for me!

Nice.

Ugh... i just don't want to spend another $50.

I wonder... can I just swap my odometer entirely from my Yazaki to my VDO cluster? Are they completely different parts because they are different cluster manufacturers? Or did Volvo provide this universal part for the clusters? They are the same year afterall... '95 Yazaki and a '95 VDO.

Ok, found the odometer gear on ebay for $12... that's at least better. Now to find the gear pod that goes with it for cheap as well....

Worse case, if you cannot find it, we have it for 25 I believe. Better then a lot of other places sell the gear for.
