Since it is throwoing a code I would bet the PNP switch as well. If you are going to look at the transmission fluid and donot know the last time it was changed, I would change it out.
No idea on the last time the tranny fluid was changed. Before spending on the cost of having the PNP switch done I will do a tranny drain and refill (not the flush) and see if that helps. Should I switch to synth or no with 165k?
The "arrow" refers to the up-shift indicator on the dash (put your car in winter mode with the little W on the selector and you'll see what I mean). The PNP switch is the "park neutral position" sensor that tells the transmission and computers when your shifter's in either park or neutral (ie so you can engage the starter etc). These can get dirty or corroded so the first plan of action is to do a "shifter row" - where you go from Park to Lo to Park quickly about 20x. The hope is that this will clean up the switch contacts enough to keep the code from reappearing. There are some other posts and vids on Youtube for how to clean or worst case replace the PNP switch. BTW, did you pull the code via your own OBD2 reader? Since you have a '95, you can also pull codes/clear codes using the diagnostics LED. Check out Volvotips for a handy online manual with codes etc, and see Robert's DIY youtube video on how to use the diagnostics port to view/clear codes without an ODB2 reader for the 94/95 850s.
