Parting out my '95 850
I just got the bad news. The engine is bad on my 850 and the repairs will cost over 3,000 dollars. So I'm going to part her out. The car only has 115,000 miles on it.
If you need something let me know. The transimission is in good shape, the seats are in good shape the power works on them, the body is straight, the headlights are good, the air condition works good, the carpets nice, ect ect. The only problem with the car is the engine I just spent $200.00 in diagnostic fees to find that out. AnywayI onlylisted the things I could think of so if you need something just pm me or email me at calveryc@comcast.net and make me an offer. I'm trying to get about $1000.00 out of it so I can put a down payment on a new car. Thanks

RE: Parting out my '95 850
Im shocked to hear the engine went bad with only 115K miles on it. My volvo dealership says that these engines are known to last 250K -300K with the proper maintenence. In fact my 96 850 had 236K trouble freemiles on it when my son totaled it when he got hit by a pickup truck last summber head on (but notting happened to him "VOLVO SAFETY").
If you dont mind, can you tell me what went wrong with the engine. Did you change the oil on time throughout the engines life. Im just curious becasue im planning on buying another 850 or an s70.

I bought it a couple of months ago at an auction so I don't know of its history. However I did car fax the vehicle before I bought it and the mileage is correct. The mechanic said a valve froze up and thats what killed the engine. It seems bizarre to me also I the shop wasn't wanting to charge $3500.00 to put a used engine into the car I would replace it. I love how the car rides and drives but its just not worth it.

If they are charging you $2600 in labor they really don't want the job. Shops make way more money doing several small jobs rather than one big job. Try and find somebody willing to do it on the side or a friend that is mechanical. I really don't think it's that tough of a job, for a guy who specializes in changing engines. The reason I didn't have it done was because my Volvo Indy shop wanted way too much money. My son in law is a GMC mechanic and after putting a head on my 850, I would not hesitate to tackle doing the engine swap with him. I really think my son and I could do it, and neither one of us are mechanics. Is there a place that specializes in swapping engines in your area? If so I would at least give them a call. It just sounds like your car is in too good of shape to be parting out. I bet you can find an engine for less than $1,000.

I found one on ebay for 1'100.00 with a tranny which I can sell fora couple of hundred dollars. Is it a tough job to replace the volvo engine? I found a guy whowill do it for $500.00 but I was worried about what kind of job he woulddo. He owns a small shop so he should know what he is doing.Should he replace the timing belt on the new engine that I buy? I found one with 45,000 miles, or so they say, on ebay.

I would definitely have the timing belt done along with normal tune up stuff (plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor etc), hoses and sepentine belt. Probably add an extra $100-200. I would probably trust somebody to do it for $500 if it was a decent shop and the guy is fairly busy. You might want to try and get some refernces or check with others who have used him. Another place might be look him up on the Better Business Bureau. If he has been ripping people off there will probably be a report on him.
Just changing the engine is not rocket science, iit's just mostly manual labor. Any gurantee on the engine? I would want at least 90 days. If you can get an engine in that car with under 45K on it for less than $2,000 I think you made a good decision. I really wish I would have done the same thing with my 94.

I found an engine only on ebay for $300.00 it comes with a six month warranty on the block. It came out of a 96 and has 122,000 miles on it. Ilike the fact that they havea picture of the donor car with the vin #. The company has overfive thousand engines sold and they have a 99.9 percent positive feedback rating. I think thats the way I'm going to go. It will cost $200.00 to get it shipped to the mechanics door but I think its worth it. This is the store I will be purchasing the engine from. They seem to have a very good reputation and have just about any item you need. Willya'll look through the warranty section on their site and tell me if there is anything I'm overlooking that I should be worried about. http://stores.ebay.com/Toms-Foreign-Auto-Parts

RE: Parting out my '95 850
I fixed it. I replaced the engine and now it runs as good as new. Plus the AC blows colder than I remember. Now I want to do some cosmetic touch ups on it. Does anyone know where I can get the trim that runs along the top of the cab of the car? It starts going up the windshield and runs to the end of the cab. I'd like to replace it because mine is peeling badly. Thanks
