Rear Main Seal Question TECH?
Ok,
Gonna do the rear main next week. Question is, which brand of seal should I buy? I can get Elring from FCP for $12 But I can get Victor-Reinz or Corteco for $29-$30 Or Elwis for $23 I am thinking that even with the considerable difference in price the Victor-Reinz is the best way?? I have used MANY Reinz parts on my Volkswagen and they are great. |

RE: Rear Main Seal Question TECH?
I always go OEM it would be best to buy an OEM.
Not sure who makes them though. They always come with a felt strip on them from the dealer hiding the info. |
RE: Rear Main Seal Question TECH?
Yeah,
One place I order from says that Rienz is OEM supplier. I think I will go with them. |
RE: Rear Main Seal Question TECH?
That would be the best.
I have never had any problems at all with them. |

Not only OE part, how about seal installation?

ORIGINAL: bitter356 Not only OE part, how about seal installation? Are you asking if there is a special tool? |
RE: Rear Main Seal Question TECH?
My point. Seen best efforts spoiled by botched install. Which should be viewed just as important as vendor.
|
RE: Rear Main Seal Question TECH?
Yes if done right any seal can be installed without any special tools.
Half the time I don't use the tool anymore because even though it is pretty new it still doesn't work right all the time. It is a 2 piece tool but sometimes I guess it goes a little crooked and doesn't sit perfect. |
RE: Rear Main Seal Question TECH?
What is the best way to do it without the tool? I am assuming I could tap in?
|
RE: Rear Main Seal Question TECH?
Yes you can tap it in easily. But make sure the inner lip goes over the crank shaft when installing the seal. I have seen people roll the seal installing it.

RE: Rear Main Seal Question TECH?
When i had to do my rear main seal on my 93 850, i used a small screw and a screwdriver. With the screwdriver drive the screw into the old seal and thentook it out with a pair of sidecutters to get into the small gap. (Should come out fairly easy) then I placed the new one in and lightly taped it in with a flat head scredriver. That's how i did mine and i haven't had any leaks.
Good luck with it |
