rear wheel drive??
hello everyone, this is a bit technical but hope anyone could help.is there a gearbox to fit the 2.3/2.5 t5 engine that would make a car rear wheel drive only??(ie so the engine could go longtitudal?). any suggestions that would help me out much appreciated and investigated!!!!! do any of the fords that use the engine have rear wheel drive only??? thanks all,luv ya!!!!!!!!!! lol
The only tranny that I k now of that is a dirrect fit would be a 960. BUT they were not avalible in the U.S. you would have to locate one in sweeden and have it imported.
Hey now Jeth1979,
If you have the $$$$ then you can probably do it [sm=smiley20.gif].
Mind you, you'd have to rework the front and rear suspension. Also rework the engine bay to remount the engine. Also much more modification that I won't go into.
Sufice to say this is a very big job and will not be cheap.

Hey now,
Oh, dont forget that the 960 is a rear wheel drive car to begin with. With a rear drive car the conversion to a manual transmission isn't too difficult.
Front drive to rear drive, well that's another story.

He hasn't really specified anything about whats its going into.
I think Im gonna guess he is going to put a 5 cylinder motor into a rear wheel drive car something like a 240 or 740.
Maybe im wrong but it is just a guess.

yes indeedy your guess is correct...as it goes the clue is in the ford..... i have just finished the bodywork/floorpan on my mk3 escort. i used a sierra floorpan and crafted it on to a escort!!!basically i bought a volvo t5 as a workhorse and to be honest have fallen in love with the engine/car..physically fitting the engine in is not a problem , its the drivetrain,as i dont think there a rwd t5 outthere, however because of that its makes me more determined!!!!. ps,yes i know its an escort but its got big sentimetal values(and flippin light).also you may say fit a cosworth into it like every one else ,but expense aside,i dont like following the masses!!!!thanks all, some great help on the subject so far. cheers
well, what do i know from shinola?...
but when i bend over and look under the 850, i notice the engine is 90 degrees the wrong way, and i dont see space for a driveshaft or a transmission that could reach toward the rear end either. [&:]
like the old farmer said when the city folks asked for directions... "i dont reckon you can get there from here"
good luck and take lots of pics!

I was wondering about something ridiculous & unrealistic.
If S70's AWD system can fit, somehow couldn't he install a LSD, disable the electronic control that makes the car FWD at above 35 mph or something like that, and make it a RWD.....
...OK, I'm ready to hear "You are an idiot" "You don't know anything" "Go home you J@p"...
.
But for the last part, I AM stuck in Japan God dung it[8D]!!! Someone get me outta here NOW before I go insane with the rudest people on Earth
!!!!!
And if you want to know, yes I am intoxicated at the moment, because dealing with the locals is getting seriously ridiculous for real.
I'm sorry, I'd better go back to Off Topic

interesting idea though, JPN.
my 850 wagon is a non-turbo with OEM everything and the handling is very good for a car its age. i imagine that changing to rear wheel would dramatically change the character of the car, wouldn't it?
i owned a full time four wheel drive with a busted transfer/drive system thatdid RWD instead of the intended full time 4WD. no comparison of course but very differect handling car without the front wheels pulling. (that old subaru died an ugly, noisy, oily, hot, smokey death. related to mistreated powertrain, by me in my youth)

I can only imagine the sheer terror of driving a T5 powered Sierra/Escort, we used to have a 2.8 XR4x4 (Iirc a lot lighter than an 850 and a good bit less powerful than a T5 at about 150bhp I think) and it was apparently pretty hairy to drive (I was too young to drive at the time, but my mother put it in a ditch on more than one occasion).
Sounds like fun.
Sounds like fun.
if only you had the car now, there worth good money!!!!!!!!ive hadmy car for four years, the last year just doing the floorpan though(sparetime and all that)it was formally an rs turbo cvh,i had it dynod at 218bhp,but albeit a bit unreliable, the novalty of front wheel drive wore off, hence the project....i"m going to use the same engine etc, just run the back wheels instead of the front.i know it will be good fun and hair raising, but since driving the t5,i feel the need to have both!!!!!lol.besides, i would actually be getting more performance for value using a t5,i just dont know if theres a way...ps,i shall get some pics up next week, im going away this weekend!!!come on sunshine..
