seal on the trans for the drive shaft
I am taking the front end of of this car. There are rips in the CV boots, one of the ball joints is bad, and the other has a riped boot. I was wondering. because I am taking the entire front end apart, would it be wise to take the drive shaft off, and replace the seal that is right on the transmission? What I mean is that the CV shaft on the passenger side is connected to a solid steel shaft that goes directly into the transmission, and there is a seal there. I have a 1995 850 GLT with an automatic transmission. HELP? Also, if I pull that shaft out, am I going to do anything wrong to the transmission? I don't know much at all about transmissions, and I don't want to know that much right now, if you know what I mean. :-)
You don't have to replace the seals if you pull the axles.
To get the right side one out you need to unbolt the bracket and split it to get the axle out.
Once you loosen the 2 12mm screws it will come apart. Then slide the axle out.

I have 140k on the car, and I want to make sure that they don't start leaking. And yes, my bad. I didn't realize that it was one entire shaft. I thought that it was two pieces, until I read the book. It was very easy to disassemble after that. Anyway, about the seals; how long do they last? Thanks again. Mr. Tech, your the best!!!
Let me explain it to you this way I have never replaced one or seen one replaced.I have seen cars with 400,000 miles and still the factory seals.
You can check them. The upper torque mount they call it.That is the one on the top of the motor.Try pushing it to the side.If the center comes out it is bad.The one on the front of the engine on the right side of the car by the lower crank pulley.Look at the bottom of the mount through the little hole.Try to see if it has been bouncing off the subframe. Most of the time if it has the rubber will be nice and clean.
The hydrolic one are hard to tell. Most of the time they will break and leak when they are bad.Look at them and see if there is dryed orange fluid on them.If they have broke and leaked the fluid out.
