I'm assuming the smoke is on the engine side of the fire wall? Is it sweet smelling? Have you checked the level of your antifreez?

If your car is turbo I will bet that the turbo return line o-ring is leaking oil.

You need to get under the car and look.

Do what tech said and check the oil return line. Oil return line is #1 culprit and a $3 fix by replaing the seals. It could also be that oil is making its way to the back of the exhaust manifold and burning. If you pull the plastic cover over the spark plugs and see oil under there you have a problem. You could try replacing the oil cap and seal (Volvo redesigned it) or it could also be a loose connection on the oil trap hose that connects up there.
