Default The Smoking yellow T-5R

So as the title suggests, I am 99.9999999999999999999999999999% positive my turbo seal just blew on me on the way to Chick-Fil-A. I am just like a smoke-stack on a train with smoke just pouring out no matter what while driving. Personally I find it kinda funny to look back and see the madness but I know I will be fixing this ASAP.

I am just going to rebuild the turbo(16T). Never done it before but I know not that hard. Taking off the turbo blah blah blah. Anything special I need to know and besides a rebuild kit off Ebay, any other kits out there.

Thoughts and advice (besides upgrading to bigger turbos, no money!! :P) would be welcome.

Also RSPI, I will post pictures of my boost gauge for you eventually

Thought I would atleast update that it was indeed the seal. The exhaust side had oil all behind the turbine hence the constant oil burning .

Just going to rebuild it, but sadly going to have to wait on the parts.

How long did it take you to get the turbo off? Did you pull the turbo with exhaust flange or just slide it out and leave the flange attached to the exhaust manifold?

Now, being no properly trained mechanic and having never taken a turbo off before, it took me about 2h/15min. It wasn't hard by any means, just had probably a good 45 min wasted by trying to get 1 hot side to exhaust manifold bolt off. Bottom left bolt was just in a weird spot with hardly any room to get a good position on it under the car.

I took everything off since I needed to see if it was leaking oil into the hot side and sure enough that's what it was.

This is giving me a good chance to figure out were I am leaking oil. Doing the IPD drain seal update or change since the oil always builds right on the oil drain nut and then drips. I lose a good amount of oil, not to mention the leaky valve stem seals, but I really not that much due to the seals. Went to 40 weight oil to combat that.

All my parts come in Friday so I will be doing all this Saturday and Sunday .

Man, the 16t turbo I have was in rough shape. I really don't believe that it had been rebuilt before. Really worn bearings and sludge all inside of it, might I mention VERY flat o-rings which is why it was leaking in the first place. Glad I did this.

Just need to get a torque wrench for the 2nm torque specs (on the compressor nut) and then I will have it in tomorrow.

Forgot to say that I actually decided to have it rebalanced since it was in such terrible shape. Plus they sandblasted it to clean it more then me. I will be getting it back at lunch time tomorrow!!

So go figure it is still pouring out blue smoke. It definitely feels better when it spools and everything though. I have an idea as to what it is. When I took it apart, you could see oil coming from the shield right behind the exhaust turbine. So the back of the CHRA. I do have a pic from another website to give an idea (Turbo issue - is this bad? - Turbobricks Forums).
That first pic right when you load it. That is where oil was getting into the hot-side for me.

From research I have been doing, some say when you put everything together and torque it down, it is supposed to seal right there.
Anyone have any input?

I am thinking I will put a ring of black rtv sealant there to seal it better. My rebuild kit did not come with that shield and I can't really find any instructions online or any posts stating to really do anything there. I am going to call Gpopshop and maybe another good rebuild place and see if I can talk to someone about it also. Can't wait to drive my car again.......

So it has a been a while and I have literally just finished this problem (finished this in 32 degree weather, fing cold).

Anyways, Picking up were I left off. So I did call Gpopshop and spoke to someone. It was interesting to here what he said and he did help a lot. Going by what I said, he did try to get me to think of other reason like crankcase pressure (pcv) and to figure out as to why there might be positive pressure in the turbo when there should be none. He was great, but I already knew my pcv was done (by me) and that I had done it correctly.

So I have finally gotten my butt up (today) and went to the junkyard and found a lower mileage 13t. Now yes I know that is a downgrade as I have the 16t in (which is the one failing). I went to 2 junkyards actually and this was the only good one. It came off a s60 2.4t. Funny thing is is that I believe it was wrecked as a test driver for a little car sales place because it had buyers warranty paper on the windows like at a dealership. I am not worried about the downgrade so to speak because I have a few mods but stock ecu, so the most I will be pushing boost is around 12psi (to account for boost spike on auto shifts). From what I have read 13ts run out of steam at higher rpm and say around 12-14psi, anymore and it is just hot air. Whenever I get around to upgrading the ecu, then I will drop in a fat turbo. :P

So on the last note, I just got back from running it hard and NO BLUE TRAIN SMOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!

....finally

On another note, jeez this car is quick. It has been a moment since I have floored it and its crazy fast for a 1995 car. Since it has the full IPD exhaust it sounds just as good too.

On another note Rspi, what is funny to me is that I am burning no oil now. I thought my valve stem seals are gone, but now I burn no oil at all. Nothing comes out the pipe

And I am running a really good 0w-20 oil, so if they were bad I would see it since that is a lighter oil.
