Speaker replacement - 97 850R Wagon
I'm having a difficult time finding out what speakers will fit in my 97 850R Wagon.
I google, and find conflicting information. This site seems to have pretty solid information, so I am hoping someone has done this before me.
I believe my wagon has 8 speakers
2 in Dash
2 in Front Doors
2 in Rear Doors
2 in Tailgate area
At least one of the factory speakers is blown. With the fader faded all the way to the front, it's fine, but if I fade it to middle or rear, I hear a slapping noise coming from a speaker in I *think* the passenger rear door.
I'm looking for an affordable set of replacement speakers. Might as well do all 8 at the same time.
But, I don't know what sizes to look at. I'd rather order speakers instead of tear things apart, order speakers, then tear things apart again to replace them.
Ideally, I'd like something the correct impedance to work with the factory amp, if possible.
Any recommendations? Something consumer grade is fine. I don't want to spend MB Quart money
I don't mind using or making adapter plates, drilling replacement holes for speakers if they will be covered by factory grilles, etc.
Any suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks!

99 % of the time the rear door speaker isnt blown.. the 2-wat tweeter has broken off and is vibrating on the cone...
Your best bet is to pull the speaker grilles and measure.
a lot of these speakers have been replaced with aftermarket ones, especially if your getting the car 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th hand..

I like the sound of the OEM speakers and your smart by wanting to stay with the same ohm, etc. The problem is that no one can find them. I'm pretty sure they are 4 ohm and most on the market is 8 in the size you need.
You can remove one of these speakers in 2 minutes. Pull the grill off, pull 2 screws, pull the door speakers out then unplug them. The dash and rear speakers are just as easy.
I do blow a few of these with my cassette mod, the bass is to strong for them. I usually fish them out of the junk yard. Looking at them closely to make sure the tweeters aren't broken off and they don't look dry rotten.
When I purchased my car it had newish speakers in it. I guess the po had them replaced. That must have costed a mint at the dealer.

Well, I pulled the speaker out that was making all the noise and looked at it.
Imagine my surprise, when I found out they were *not* original, as I had thought. I talked with my Dad, and he reminded me that I helped him pick these out years ago, when the original rear door speakers went out.
The replacement speakers in the rear door are Polk EX402A. In a way, I'm surprised a 4 inch speaker puts out this much quality sound. The drivers side speaker is intact and still sounds good.
The rubber surround has pulled away from the speaker basket on the passenger side. I'm not sure what sort of glue I could use on this? Does anyone have any feedback?
I found some decent looking Pyle speakers at parts express, and they are 15 bucks a pair. I know that back when I drove a car that would rattle your teeth from 2 blocks away, Pyle was frowned upon.. I use them in my pinball machine restorations - but those amplifiers don't put out as much power as the factory amp in my 850 does.
So, the first thing I'm going to try is glue. If that fails, I'll probably grab a good used set of originals off eBay.

We could hash this over again but I think there are more than enough threads out there to answer any question you might have, sedan or wagon.

Just wanted to post an update after replacing both sets of door speakers today.
My local Best Buy had a sale going on Polk DXi 525s. These got decent ratings online, and while I was hoping to spend about $50 per set, I was willing to go up to $75 based on past experience with Polk brand speakers and the fact that they got good reviews. I also know that 5-1/4s are a pretty popular size, and if something were to happen to my 850, I could likely put them in my 'next' car.
If they had been the 'retail' $100/pair, I would have passed.
I popped a front door speaker out, and it was 4 ohm from the factory. After doing some research, I found the original rear door speakers were also 4 ohm.
They did *not* mount as easily as I had hoped! The dome tweeter on top of the speaker would not clear the speaker grilles.
Rather than return them, I got a little creative. I removed the door panels, laid them on my workbench, and set the speakers in the openings. Once I was sure everything cleared, I marked 4 holes where the bolts needed to go, and drilled 4 holes. I used 8-32 stainless machine screws with integrated lock washer through the door panel, then attached the speakers to the backside of the door panel using 8-32 nylon locknuts.
So, any time I ever want to service these speakers, I will have to pull the door panels. Not that removing the door panels is any big deal on this car, but it is worth mentioning.
Here's a sample pic of the passenger front door with the speaker installed from the rear.
There's a 3-1/2 in the same series from Polk. I'm considering putting them in the dash and the rear speaker locations - but honestly, the 4 5-1/4s sound pretty dang good as-is!
