Default still smoking

hi, this is a follow up thread on my 850 turbo.

before i did the repairs, the CEL light is not on.

the turbo was definitely shot causing oil to leak into the fresh air intake tube and into the intercooler pipes as well as into exhaust port of the turbo. the carbon deposit in the waste gate side was so thick and there was oil dripping out from the exhaust tip at the rear bumper when the car is run.

i checked on the spark plugs as well as the exhaust manifold and no sign of carbon deposits there which would indicate valve seals and compression leak. no smoke and no + pressure coming out of the dipstick also which would indicate valve seals and comprssion problems.

i changed the turbo, cleaned the oil/flame trap and replaced everything.

i started the car and there was no smoke coming from the exhaust tip for maybe half an hour. but the CEL light is on now and after an hour, there is this thick white smoke again.

this morning, i disconnected the exhaust from the turbo and started the car, left it to idle for 30mins. and run it outside. no black or white smoke comming out of the turbo exhaust side.

my question is, is it possible the white smoke is caused by the oil deposit in the catalytic converter as well as the muffler since the previous owner used it for a long time with the turbo shot?

thanks in advance for your input on this.

yes, highly likely actually. your codes are prolly for your o2 sensors.

Default Ptc

tony, is there suppose to be something inside the ptc? the thing on the fresh air hose? coz when i checked on mine, i can see through the big hole all the way into the small hole inside of the hose. i think there should be something in there coz there is an electrical connection in it.

i cant say for sure. but i believe that you should be able to see through it with no blockage.

if you are still smoking run some sea foam through your exhaust and clean it out good. (fyi, seafoam will smoke like no other while it goes through)

If the turbo was pumping alot of oil into the exhaust(Kind of like you said above) then it will take a while for it to stop smoking. Usually a good test drive will get most of it out.
If there was alot of oil in the exhaust it would also take out the O2 sensors.

Default non turbo muffler

hi tech, but before i did the repair, the cel light was not on even tough there was a lot of oil coming out of the pipe. i'm prety sure i put back everythink after i was done working on it. what may have caused cel light?

there is actualy a non turbo 850 wagon in our local pick a part place here but it is a non turbo. will this work? i'm planning of pulling it out tomorrow. also, i plan to buy some liquid cleaning agent like the one they use to degrease sink, i'm thinking of pouring it into the pipe then flushing it out with water since the muffler has been pulled out of the car now.

if i try this, i'll let you know the result.

thanks again guys and i really appreciate your help.

There's probably a lot of oil in your exhaust (cat and muffler) which will take some time to burn off. It needs to get hot before it starts burning and smoking. Once I got a good looking used muffler which turned out to have been full of oil from the donnor and this caused me to blow smoke like the car was on fire for several days. It should clear up... depends on how much oil is in there.

The turbo and non turbo exhaust is totally different.
The O2 sensors area pretty much the same though.

Like I stated above take it on a good test drive to burn the oil out.

Default thanks tony and tech

here's another update, i removed the whole catback muffler and went to buy liquid plumber from 99cents store (i bought only two coz they're expensive hahaha). poured the diluted solution into the muffler then left to soak in half a day. washed it out after with water. no more smoke now.

next project is to find out CEL code it's throwing out. is there a way to reset ecu? in my other cars, i just remove battery then turn off headlamp to drin ecu power then connect back the battery. is there also a manual way to check cel codes? i know toyotas can be done by counting how many times cel flashes.

thanks again guys

If it is newer than 1995 you need a scanner to read the codes. If it is older you can read and clear the codes yourself.

Default all done and happy

my son took the car for emission yesterday and it passed easily with very low numbers. i think the liquid plumber did wonders as it really cleaned the muffler and pipes good. it did smoke a lot for two days of use but we noticed the smoke thinning after.

thanks a lot guys.
