Default strut spacer replacement

I am hearing a knock with I roll over big bumps. I took it in to a suspension technician and he said that the spacer in between the top of the strut and the bottom of the strut tower had worn down and needed to be replaced. When I lift the car up you can see the strut moving up and down above the strut tower.

Do the spacers or bushings need to be replaced?
if they need to be replaced is there anything that would be good to do while Im at it? except shocks cant afford that right now.

Thanks,
Chet

This is most likely what you need; very common failure on these cars:

Fcp has them too. If the car has a ton of miles, might want to do these too while in there:

I would highly suggest you replace your strut bearing when you do your strut seat. You will be right there, in fact you will take the bearing off to get to the upper spring seat. You will regret not doing this if it goes bad 20K miles down the road. This will cost a bit more now and save you labor later. Make sure you have a quality spring compressor if you tackle this yourself...I did mine.

Thanks guys,
I do have a good spring compressor and I have done a rebuild on my BMW 2002. These prices at FCP are much cheaper than buying oem, I dont think getting the bearings will be too much.

Thanks again,
Chet
