strut squeek/loose?

Hi
We have noticed squeaking from the front end of our V70 recently.
When I pop the hood to look at the struts, the top of the drivers strut nut/shaft can be turned rather easily. (the nut is tight) The passenger side will not spin at all. Is it normal to be able to turn the strut shaft like this?

Thanks for any thoughts on this

BTW, the shocks still dampen the ride just fine, springs keep the car even both sides

I had a similar problem with my 95 Volvo 850 GLT when I bought it. The strut mounts had to be replaced. The noise went away.

Negative!

The problem is the strut mount. If it turns, it's destroyed. Best to get one of the heavy duty mounts from a XC90, or the IPD heavy duty mounts - they last longer.

If you happen to loosen that nut, you face a spring becoming unsprung - and that's a bad thing!

Strut mounts need to be replaced. It is a good idea to also replace the spring seats when you do this job.

Thanks guys
Our car has enough miles on it that replacing strut/mounts seems like a very reasonable thing to do.

Thanks again
Pete
