sun roof / moon roof WILL NOT TILT CLOSED
1995 850 Turbo Wagon.
For some time the sun roof would not slide open, but only tilt open & closed.
Now it has stopped tilting all the way closed. I can tilt it all the way open, but it only closes part way; there is about a half inch gap. I can push down on it and get the bottom edge of the gasket to touch the top of the roof.
I need to fix this before it rains, predicted in a few days.
I think I downloaded the instructions for removing the whole thing... gotta search the hard drive...
TIA

I still have yet to fix the one in my Yellow one it won't do anything at all. I have a spare entire setup in the garage waiting to go in. But I cannot seem to find the time.
The 850 sunroof is the best setup so far. Not many of the cars have problems.
We are just blessed with the ones that do have a problem.

But what might the problem be? A piece of junk stuck in the tracks? Does the sun roof have a computer monitored position sensor that might get out of calibration (like the front seat recline position) ? If so, could it have been screwed up by a non-dealer checking & resetting the computer codes?
I need to know what to look for if I take it apart. I need to re-glue the cloth on the sliding cover anyway.
This car is just a piece of crap. I've stopped keeping track of all the money another $900 in the last two weeks for random stalling in three tries (first repaired wire to EGR/Fuel sensor, then replaced the sensor, then the main battery cable harness & two fuel sensors).
In March of this year, the entire transmission for over $3500.
In December, the SECOND turbocharger & timing belt for $2800.
This car only has 166,000 miles on it.
Volvos are CRAP. But I'm stuck with it.

RE: sun roof / moon roof WILL NOT TILT CLOSED
Took off the plastic trim but I don't think that's part of it. Cycling up & down I am able to close it, especially if I help by pushing down from the top. I can even push it down into the "deeper than closed" position it takes just prior to sliding horizontally. The passenger side does not go down as far as the drivers side. Even pushing on it, it will not begin to slide horizontally backwards. It seems that it does not have enough torque. Is there a gear which might be stripped?
I'm going to take off the glass and see if the mechanism works without it in place. And I'll be able to see if anything is blocking the track.

OK, there is a broken part. A plastic sliding part with two pivot pins, which rides on the lower rails in the rear, underneath the metal lever/cam assembly.
On the passenger side, part number 42009060.
I don't know if I could wiggle an unbroken part into its slot without disassembly or not.
I was unable to get the passenger rail assembly "down" flat, in order to test if the thing would slide horizontally backwards. The lever/cam wants to pop out sideways from its plastic guide slot, and then it moves upwards above it. I decided not to make it go flat since in that position I would certainly not be able to get the new part into its slot.
Anyone know how this part works?

The part you're describing is a common breaking point. The only solution is to replace the track on that side. Big job because you have to drop the headliner, but not a super hard job. http://volvospeed.com/Repair/sunroof.phpTry pulling the sunroof glass out and having another look for broken pieces still caught up in the works. Then while someone else is depressing the switch, you should be able to guide the sunroof back into place. The dealership wants $750 Cdn per side for each track...

That's the php I used to guide my removal.
I can't believe you have to buy an entire assembly to get that one moving part. And the price is also ridiculous. I could have a machine shop fabricate the part out of titanium for less money.
Volvos are ****e.

Old post has this:
>
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/dow.../Volvo_850.zip
There's the service manual. There is a section regarding the sunroof.
>
But the section has no parts data no exploded diagram etc. Very limited scope of repair covered.
The dealer can't find that part number. I need an exploded diagram to point it out.

I've identified 3 broken parts. One is the piece of plastic hinged to the lower metal "scissors" piece towards the rear.
Another is a piece of plastic from the front that broke off from the rail; it acts as a guide and might not be necessary.
The third I can't figure out yet, but it has a pin that slides in a groove somewhere.
HOW DO I REMOVE THE WHOLE RAIL???
I can see in the rear that its held down by friction clips, so if I can slide it forwards an inch it should release. I have removed the small & large torx screws in the front, and I can't remove the whole front plastic piece because it has long arms that are inside the runner area.
I have removed the 3 torx screws holding the cover over the worm drive.
And the last shorter screw on the rail towards the rear.
The rail seems to be glued down or something. Why can't I just lift it upwards?
Do I need to disconnect the worm drive? How?

I put it all back together to see if I could at least get the window closed before it rains. I forgot to put in the sliding headliner cover though.
BUT now the stupid thing works. Missing 3 parts, but it works. I'm not going to mess with it though, because if it slips out of the rail again it will get stuck.
Still want to know how to remove the rail assembly though. And get the correct name for these parts so I can find prices for them, if they are available separately.
I think the only way to get the sliding parts out of the grooves is to lift the rail and slide them out the front end. Until I do that, I can't tell if the lower metal scissors part, which has the broken plastic part, is part of the sliding part or attached to the rail itself.
