Default T5 and R question

Hello guys, I'm new here obviously. I'm looking for a new daily driver and started looking at the kind of cars I tend to really like, euro cars. First I was looking at a vdub, I can't afford an audi yet but a 850 turbo model from volvo seems to be the best I can do out of all euro cars. Volvo has the sporty umph and then some that makes a car fun with a sunroof and in most cases heated seats and all the nice features.

I have a question though, edmunds has been wrong before when it comes to mpg on cars and I was wondering since turbos need prem. what is the actual mpg for the R and T5 models. They are both better then my truck far as gas but I'm hoping somewhere in the 20s on a stick. And what is the popular performance chip for a volvo? GIAC or is it something else? I'm looking to see if I can add some extra umph and make the car more effecient on gas. Oh, and top speed.

Thanks guys... (roughly 1995-1998)

1. IMO you don't need to use Premium gas, some say you should some don't. On my 1999 s70 awd I don't because it costs too much. As for milage you should see like 23-27 about.

2. As for performance chips look into...

- http://www.vptuning.com (RICA dealer)
- Speed Tuning USA
- Upsolute

IPD and RICA are the most exspensive, but are really good. Speed Tuning USA is the cheapest but still a good chip. I like my Speed Tuning chip. Upsolute is around $400 and Eurosporttuning is a decent upgrade. If your going to do a chip upgrade do an exhaust upgrade as well, 3" downpipe to 2.5" catback with free flowing muffler, or if you plan on upgrading your turbo then 3" downpipe to full 3" catback with free flowing muffler. It also wouldn't hurt to upgrade to SAMCO hoses for the added boost your going to get from any one of those chips. And with the Speed Tuning USA upgrade you can get a 12PSI / 15PSI / 17PSI program. I have the 12PSI and love it.

Alright, I don't know exactly if I will want to do upgrades if I get one, I mean yeah it would be nice but it's a dd, not a street racer. I think I'm looking at a 1995 850T for sure. On that model supposedly standard features are the heated seats and leather for sure and comes with 222HP, we'll see how it plays. Once I sell my truck I'll be able to actually buy something. Know a site with some really great read on the car?

on a stick.
You will NOT find any 850 Turbo/T-5/T-5R/R imported into the U.S. with a 5-speed manual transmission. Only the base model 850 and 850 GLT were imported with a 5-speed.

If you insist on having a 5-speed manual, the 1998 S70 T-5 is what you are looking for.

Some VIN info when you begin your search on eBay, autotrader.com, and cars.com...

Model Year 1993 thru 1995 850 Turbo is comparable to Model Year 1996 and 1997 850 T5.
Model Year 1995 T5R is comparable to Model Year 1996 and 1997 850 R.

http://vin.stronghold.com/Lookup.aspx
You can determine model year using 10th position of VIN...
S - 1995
T - 1996
V - 1997
W - 1998

You can determine engine using 5th and 6th position of VIN...
53 - S70 T5 - B5234T3 - 2.3L 8.5:1 High-Pressure-Turbo (HPT) TD04-16T at 10 psi
55 - 850, 850 GLT - B5254S - 2.4L 10.5:1 non-turbo
56 - 850 GLT - B5254T - 2.4L 9.0:1 Low-Pressure-Turbo (LPT) TD04-13G at 7 psi
57 - 850 Turbo, 850 T5 - B5234T - 2.3L 8.5:1 High-Pressure-Turbo (HPT) TD04-15G at 10 psi

It is rare to find them with a manual tranny, but it is possible to find one. However you can do a manual swap.

A auto to manual transmission swap is too complicated, manual to auto is pretty much the only thing I would suggest doing to someone. You would have to add a clutch pedal and do that whole set up plus still take out the old and swap in the new and change the shifter.

What is the top speed on the 95 850t?

Top speed according to Motor Trend for the 94 850 Turbo was 152 mph. Once in the middle of Kansas I floored my 94 850 Turbo and got it up to 127 before it shifted into overdrive. It went over 130 before I shut it down. I am fairly certain it would have hit 150 had I kept my foot in it.

There are some subtle differences between 1995 and 1996/97 models. The 1996/97 rear spoiler is larger. The "R" has gray trim. I believe that the front air dam with foglights was an option for all models.

Yes you can Find the Turbo 850's in a stick. It is very hard but they are out there.
Everyone that has one holds onto it.

That is the Normal body for the R car.

Alot of people with the Turbo cars buy the R Bumper and put it on thier cars.

I have a 95, automatic and it gets about 24mpg. Have you purchased yours yet or are you still looking.

Mine has heated seats, sunroof, dual power seats, 8 speaker sound, etc... I do use premium gas and experience good performance as far as ummph. I feel it is worth the extra 2-3$'s everytime I fill up.

I have used premium. I did get better gas mileage on premium. There is better everything with premium. I just don't want to pay the extra money for it.

I'm still looking for a 95 850T...I just need to sell my truck before I can buy one. I just got my headlight assembly in to fix that and I need to fix my tailgate latch and she'll be set to be sold. I don't know how long it's going to take to sell, shouldn't be long, it's a good deal.

Anyone know how to replace an assembly on a 94 f150? lol,

Look for a yellow 95 850 T5R. There were less than 1,000 imported to the USA. The black ones are rather easy to find. Another one that is pretty rare is a orangish-red 96 850 R. I really like the yellow ones and my 2nd choice is white. Wife put the halt to me buying the orangish-red one. Said I was too old and who do I think I am, the Dukes of Hazard? She also said it would clash with her burgundy wagon while sitting in the garage together. I thought she was being funny until I was on my way to look at the car and she let me know she was serious. I still laugh about it, but I also didn't go look at the car, especially when my daughter agreed with her on both counts.

Sounds good... I have a black 95 and am willing to give it up if its what you are looking for. Has 60k on it and up to 54k, was completely serviced at the volvo dealership like clockwork.

Uhm, well ya see about the T5R, I don't think I can find one around here in my price range. To behonest I've never seen one of these cars around here. I hate the yellow color, I'm looking for a white or black one. Your white one looks so damn sexy with that bumper and stuff. When I get one first things I'm going to do to it is get me a front bumper like that, change the grill to a plain chrome one and there is nothing better looking then those angel eye headlights. I saw a pair on one and it looked close to a beamer, I loved it.

Anyways I don't know if I can find one, I don't mind traveling, I search a 200 mile radius on autotrader. My price range is roughly 4g, no more then 5g I'm thinking. I doubt you'll want to sell your black one in that range specially if the miles are that low. If anyone knows some body who is looking for a truck give 'em a heads up on me. Asking for $1300, engines has less then 60k on it and it's a 1994 F150 2WD long bed/STD cab. She runs damn good, I smoked the tires today. New high torq starter, split window and all that jazz.

Besides autotrader.com and eBaymotors.com

Try Cars.com -- Most newpapers throughout the U.S. place another copy of their auto classifieds on cars.com
