Is it the tie rods?
I have been getting some shuddering upon braking with my 1996 NA 850 wagon. It's especially noticeable upon stopping from freeway speeds. Mostly this seems to come from the front driver's side. Previously I've replaced the front rotors and pads, thinking that the rotors were warped. No change. Someone here suggested that it might be the tie rods. I did the 3/9 give-it-a-shake test and noticed some movement, plus a light thunking noise. This afternoon I put a new inner and outer tie rod on the driver's side, hoping that would solve the problem. After I finished I put the tire back on and again rocked the tire. Can't say it's rock solid. There's still some movement, and still that very light thunking sound. Suggestions?
When I grab the tire at 12 and 6 and shake I'm not getting any movement. The control arms were were replaced by the previous owner about 35,000 miles ago. Which is not to say it couldn't be the control arms.
+1 On the ball joints. Mine were tight and on the newer side when I hit a friggen pot hole. Tt trashed the pass side ball joint and gave me a slight wander which was gone after replacement and alignment.
