Cool Too fast on speed humps and ....

Scrape! Donk!

This falls out 50m later. What purge tanks is this? Part of the exhaust? Fuel? Some crazy cabin filter? Either way I broke it off on a speed hump. It looks like it was a black cylinder with two small narrow clean pipes & what looks like a carbon filter filled with black granules. I can see 'Made in USA' & Purge Tank on the broken plastic. Laptop power supply should give you scale, round bits are roughly 4" (10cm)

Or is it some snake oil gadget a previous owner installed as a miracle fix economy/ performance/ emission/ sex appeal?

I have a complete donor V70 here so stripping bits all over. Do I bother replacing this?

Part of the purge system. Do you have a CEL?

Thanks. No CEL other than the service light that always comes on at start. I service it myself, and can't clear that. Car ran perfectly fine afterwards, no additional heat, no miss.

Default Still no CEL, still no idea what it is

Not a Volvo part for sure - made by GM according to stamp on the side. Why was it installed? Emission controls? I'm going to run without it unless someone tells me a good reason not to.

Without it or without plugging the lines you're going to have a vacuum leak from the engine and a vent hose from the fuel tank open to the atmosphere in your left (drivers) front wheel well. It's supposed to be a carbon canister that holds the gasoline vapors from the fuel tank and then vents them into the intake to burn during cruising.

You should try to find the lines and plug them as you'll lose gas venting to the air and might have a slight lean condition on a cylinder depending on where the vacuum line comes off the intake. I don't have any idea exactly where that nipple is.
Better yet, get a used (Vovlo) can and secure it properly and reconnect it. It's likely someone duct taped that GM part under there to get by and the bump knocked it loose.

I'm not sure if the one for yours would be round or rectangular but there is a chance the one you have pieces of is the right one just made by GM ??? Turbo might be different from NA ??

Thanks for that, I will discuss it with the mechanic tomorrow, and hopefully find a purge on my donor V70 I can use.
