Default Turbo

I have a 1997 850 wagon .The turbo appears to be leaking. How big of a job to get it off? I assume it can be rebuilt. Are they available anywhere other than a volvo dealer? Thanks

Turbos? Available anywhere else then Volvo?

1. Check Ebay

2. Check this forum and Volvospeed's forum

3. Viva Performance sell the 16T, 18T and 19T turbos

Where it is leaking? It could be the RMS (Rear Main Seal) if so you can get a new one from http://www.ipdusa.com they sell the RMS's there.

Where is it leaking from?
It could only be the return line o-ring leaking.
It the oil is slightly dripping from where the Induction hose attaches to the turbo that is normal.

If you are led to believe that your turbo has a problem...

Does your engine use more than 1/2 quart of oil per thousand miles?

Remove the intercooler pipe between turbo and intercooler. Do you see a thick oil film inside of pipe?

Remove the turbo inlet hose between air filter box and turbo. Do you see oil puddled inside of turbo housing? Firmly pull on turbo compressor wheel. Is there a lot of slop and play in the turbo shaft?

Have your current turbo rebuilt professionally. It shouldn't cost much more than $300. Remember to purchase and install a new turbo oil feed line.

And one other thing... For the price of a rebuilt, your existing turbo housing can be over-bored for a larger compressor wheel, such as -15G, -16G, -16T, or -17C.

Shop and compare...
