Default Valve cover???

My 93 850 will not start and I have narrowed it down to sticking lifters. I have heard that you cannot remove the valve cover without removing the head? Is this true.

Well these cars really do not have valve covers. They have the lower portion of the head and the upper portion which covers the valves. I guess some people refer to the upper portion as the valve cover, and some refer to the plastic piece over the spark plugs as the valve cover. You can definitely remove the upper portion of the head w/o removing the lower portion and that exposes your cams. The cams are set up to push down on you valves via little piston like things, so there are really no lifters. If your car will not start you need to check to see if it is getting fuel, then check for spark, and most important make sure the timing belt did not break.

Hey tech look how much I learned working on my car with my son in-law.

Thanks for info. When I take the valve cover off (plastic piece) Where do I take the upper head piece off. Arent all those bolts holding the whole head down?? The car has fuel, timing is fine, has spark but wont start. Seems like it low on compression.

There are about 30 small bolt that hold the cams into the lower head. When you take these off it will remove the upper head and expose the cams and those little piston like things that push down the valves. You will see large holes with bots in them that hold the lower part of the head to the block. The valves are in the lower portion of the head. Have you checked the compression yet? You should do that before taking the upper head off.

But before you take it all apart disconnect the fuel and spark and crank it over a bunch of times. To get things moving good and oil flowing. Then connect everything. Then hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank it and see if it will start.

If you pull the CAM COVER off you will need to remove the timing belt and everything else.
