A lot of 850's have broken ash trays because car wash places try to remove them for cleaning and break them. The insert comes out for cleaning, the entire thingis held in by 2 screws. This video will show you how to replace the Volvo 850 ash tray.

 

I've debated a few times what a guy could put in place of the ashtray. I'm a non-smoker, and other than using it for storage, the ashtray is of no use for me.

 

I agree. It's in the way and not of much use for storage.
