1997 Volvo 850 sedan, non turbo. I have been breaking down the engine in preparation to send to the shop for a valve job on my daughters volvo after a timing belt broke. Everything has gone smoothly mostly because of the excellent information on this forum and I really appreciate it, thanks.
The number two exhaust side bolt broke about an inch below the block head. I was able to get the head off but I need to know how to drill this bolt out without taking the block out,(no laughing please). All other bolts came out and the gasket looked good except for the number two hole which showed some scaling and rust.
After taking the head off there were two little crecent indentations in each piston from the intake valves but no head damage or dents on the perimeter of the pistons. Havent taken the valves out yet but I suspect the number four and five intake valves are bent.
So I have two questions, how can I get the bolt out of the head and will the dents in the pistons require pulling them out as well. Thanks again for all the information on the forum. My goal is to fix it right and not have to worry about her driving on trips in this car.

My son in law is a mechanic and he showed me a good way to get a broken bolt out. Drill a hole in the bolt and drive a torx bit that is a little too big into the hole. Then put a ratched on the torx bit. It worked for him. He hates easy-outs cause the break in the hole and make matters worse.
I probably would not worry about the pistons as long as there is no damage on the sides.

It is looking like the chances are slim to none that I am goiing to get this bolt out. Question, would it make more sense to remove the rest of the engine, head, tranny and pan, and then separate the head so a machine shop can drill it out or try to take the head only. I don't see a lot of ways to avoid pulling it all out. This is starting to worry me.

Sorry, I meant the block, tranny and pan, the head is being rebuilt at the machine shop, I busted most of the intake valves. Can you take the block out w/o the tranny or should I just take the rest of the engine out? thanks, when they are through with the head, I would love to put it back on, Bill
