Absolutely that's too much money. I bought my '94 850 turbo wagon this past spring for $1700. I have MAYBE $2200 in it now (and believe me, you'll be spending some money on ANY car that you buy thats from the mid 90s) including new tires, PCV system, coolant flush, tranny flush, brake system flush, cleaning supplies, etc.

Id be at R spec for engine performance and STILL be well under $3000, and my car is VERY clean and runs well.

 

No there really is not difference in the T5 and the R other than what we have mentioned in this thread. I would much rather have a T5 that was well taken care of than an R that was not.

I still believe it is tough to find a realiable car for less than $3,000. But if you are willing to shop long enough and look at many cars, you will find one. Stick with private owners to get the best deal.

 

Then replace the steering wheel and armrest, DONE! LOL You guys are killing me.

Back to the white one in the garage. Never, never make your offer before you have checked out the car, and never, never do it in an e-mail. Always in person with a sad look on your face or on the phone. Kinda whine it out. It drags them into the deal and then lets them down with sincerity. They don't feel like your just trying to take their heads off. Expample: After you have checked it out, meet with them and say "you know, I really like the car and want it, but from what I can tell, if I got it, I would have to put BLANK, BLANK AND BLANK into it to make it comfortable to me. NADA says that a clean trade in value is $$$$$. Based on that, and what I have to put in it to make it comforable for me, I can afford to pay $$$$$. (Now here is the kicker). If you guys CAN AFFORD to sell it to me for that, I can get the money to you by DATE. I usually get turned down, but they always call back the next day. Whenever I send an e-mail offer, I never get the car.

I still like the rareness of the R and most of the custom features in the R. The only thing I don't like is the rougher ride and low profile tires. As for the car being BONE STOCK, I really like that. That means that they probably have not been out there trying to tear the car up. My T-5R is stock, all except the front lower bumper that I need to get.

I troll different sites a lot and do see 1 T-5R's for sale every 3 months. Hope things work out with your purchase.

I have found 2 more that I am going to look at one is a 850R wagon. Red with charcoal/black interior. It has 160,000 miles. The owner said he has 4 volvo's and needs to sell one of them.

The next one I am pretty stoked about. It is 1997 T5 Black/Charcoal. The best part is it only has 89,000 miles. I am going to go look at it tomorrow.

I'll pay a little more for a cleaner car. They are within a couple hundred dollars of each other and within my budget ($3500-$4000) Here is a picture of them.

 

I really like the R wagon. There is one in my town that I started to leave a note on. I haven't seen if for about 2 months now, I hope they didn't dump it somewhere. It did not look as clean as the one you are looking at. More sleeper effect the better to me. But a Volvo wagon screams soccer mom.

He is asking $4500. I was thinking to go in like $4,000. This is the specs. It's a 1997 850R, Non-smoker, has 160,000 miles. He said he replaced the timing belt at 102,000 (shortly after he bought). He said the A/C works ok for the summer but he has to recharge it every year. Obviously it has a leak somewhere. Also mentioned there is a small leak around the manifold cover because oil seeps a little. He said he was going to have this fixed before it was sold. Small accident where someone backed into the passanger quarter panel. Quarter panel was replaced. Has new brakes, suspension in the front and some other misc. things replaced. I still like it. Maybe you won't have to put a lot into it.

 

Recharging AC every year probably means it needs an evaporator. They all do eventually. That's a $1500 repair. Not sure I would go $4,000 knowing that. You might want to have it checked out to make sure and then negotiate the price accordingly.

 

Is that parts and Labor...I was thinking I could do it myself if that is whats wrong? I might just have to buy a $7.00 can of R-134 for a while.

 

I went wayyyyy out and bought a questionable 95 850 in fantastic condition. But thanks to you guys, I know what to expect and what to do, and that makes owning the car fun, with a little help from my friends, (or, was that feinds ?)
