Tech, if you are out there, my C70 coupe stalls out while I am driving. It happens from time to time. I had an '86 240 wagon with a similar issue. It would stall, I would start it up, and drive on without issues. It turned out to be some kind of transistor or something electrical like that around the distributor that caused this issue back then. Do you have any thoughts on this?

 

I would say to check the fuel pump and relay.

 

You should identify what is actually missing when it shuts off. It's either fuel or the spark. Or should I say you need an ignition module that would require a new crank sensor while it is out of the engine.

Thanks everyone. The fuel pump pressure is good. The relay is working. I suspect the relay either works or it doesn't...like the way a fuse works. Ignition module huh? Well, ok...I will have to get that checked out.

 

I have seen many fuel pump relays cause the same problem you are having. You can open up the relay and inspect all solder joints.

I checked the fuel pump relay...the thing looks brand new and all the soldering connections are good. The stalling happens at low speeds. The engine seems to surge a bit before stalling....like it runs rough....then there is no acceleration when i step on the gas....then it stalls...the check engine light came on and codes P0121 and P1238 appeared. They were erased and did not reappear. Later on in the day the check engine light came on again with code P1175. Again, it was erased and has not appeared. The car runs fine on the highway, it just seems this situation happens during local driving.

 

Maybe the throttle body is dirty or going bad.

 

Tech, I wanted to let you know the outcome of the stalling issue. I brought the C70 to a Volvo dealership the other day. I was going to see if they would replace the ETM that is under that new warranty (10yrs/200K miles). The dealership was accomodating and if the ETM was the cause of the issue they would replace it no questions asked. They did somediagnostics and low and behold it turned out to be the top intercooler hose was spit at the bottom. The car runs great now!
