Default intermittent starting

TECH, ponder this and give me your thoughts on this problem which is neither expected nor normal. Lately, and on a very sporatic basis, when I start the 2002 Volvo it fires up immediately then dies just as suddenly. After a few attempts to start............it will and will run just as nice as can be. There are no codes showing..........and the CEL is 'silent'. It seems to do this when the engine is cold and not when 'hot'..........having been driven.

Thx

This exact thing has happened to me. It stems from the chip in the key and the antenna in the column. Had the antenna replaced and updated the program to recognize the older keys. Worked great, for a while. still does it on occasion. the easy fix is: when it happens, remove the key from the ignition completely, wait a few seconds, reinsert and start. Hope this helps.

yeah i get this too usually when it's very cold outside and it's the first start-up in the morning. turn the key again and it starts right up.

also this morning it was so cold by florida's standards that my car idled 100RPM lower than normal. then on my drive home today the car would barely idle until it was fully warm. the only code i have is for the catylist.

I agree but I believe last year he just had all of the parts replaced in the entire system. SO maybe there is a problem with the key.

thanks gentlemen for those thoughtful replies. TECH recalls a year ago when the antenna was replaced twice, then the immoblizer, then the computer.................and finally the garage realized that the whole issue was a..........get this...........a loose connection in the computer harness. So I believe that you Tim and TECH are spot on with the key issue. I guess I'll use one of my other keys. As to Eater............his c-70 won't start because a Marine probably doesn't know which way to turn the key to the start position. Maybe if the sargeant starts calling the lieutenant "sir", I'll fly down to Florida and show the poor lad which way the key turns. Thank god the Army is willing to show those poor devils a thing or two.....

Eater, in Army speak, you turn it to your military right. Now for the Corp, you first have to find someone who can show you your right hand from the left. Once you have 'right' tattooed on your right hand you shouldn't have any problem. Next week the Army will give you a course of instruction on how to tell your left foot from the right. Just as an aside Eater, did you stay in the reserve? Is there a chance that you're going to be re-called? When I resigned my commission I held my breath for a number of years................

Well now we have three branches on tap...........
I hope you realize Tim, I'm only kidding Eater. The Marines have earned every accolade and their uniforms sure beat the army's!! We ground pounders have always been at each other. Now as to the Navy.........Eater, did you ever get a warm cot and hot food complete with silverware when you were living for a year in a tent? Ah, those Navy sailors had it good!

Now as to the intermittent starting, I changed keys and voila..........no problems.

Oh I figured as much, that's why I felt the need to chime in. Glad to hear that the problem is fixed (for now). Something to be said for sitting 5 miles off shore and lobbing missles, hehehe. I kid I kid. As we have all been there, no matter what branch, it's an interesting job that doesn't pay squat.

Actually, I was going to ask you if you were at a dealer. Ours here in Lakeland closed. Now I either need to go to Orlando or Tampa for service. There is a little local shop here that specializes in Volvo, Benz and BMW. I hear it's good, but will not do warranty work.
