steering rack replacement

Hey everyone. I have a 2001 c70 convertible with the 2.4t. I have been having some power steering fluid leakage so I went to volvo and they quoted me like 1800 to replace the steering rack. That is nuts. I found a rack online here. http://www.autopartspoint.com/addtoc...80-00853.html#
and was wondering how hard would this be to do myself. One issue is I have no manual to use. Any advice on manual or how-tos would be awesome.

When turning your steering wheel do you get a knocking sound or feel like something is grinding and cracking ? thats what im getting and most likely its the steering rack too...dammit ! haha

sorry what I was getting at is that it might not be the steering rack that needs to be replaced.

Volvo might be trying to rob, you go to different garages for other opinions

Volvo replaced my rack under warranty for the reason of a leak. I have an old 02 c-70. After that replacement it went on and the pump was replaced and then the resovoir. Interesting. At any rate it's no big deal changing a rack out. I am sure TECH will comment on the appropriate steps.

As to the cost of parts.........most all European autos charge an arm and a leg for parts but by the same token, they are most generally superior in quality to aftermarket. You might want to check on the cost of a re-build.

You have to support the motor and drop the rear subframe to replace the steering rack.

drop the sub frame.

Well there is only a leak and no crunching or knocking. I will pursue checking out other causes and fixes. Otherwise I don't think i am prepared to drop the subframe and all the other stuff tech mentioned. Jb weld perhaps.
