Default engine charging battery

I have recently sold my 2021 XC 60 Recharge and replaced it with a 2024. I am so impressed with the technology coming in the new 2024 XC 60 recharge.
Yesterday I drove about 85 miles and used the full power with battery recharge option. When switching I had 3 miles available to me from battery and I ended up having 34 miles pure electric available to me when I got to my destination. Really impressive. Have all the power for the highway that I need at 70 miles an hour on full electric and saving engine wear and tear in the heat in town using full electric. I do let the battery cool down when getting home and plug at night for cheaper rate and when the batteries are cooler. I don’t know how much extra gas I consumed to create that energy for the battery. if there’s an engineer or anyone who knows about additional engine power needed please post or give me some direction.

It seems to me that a certain amount of additional resistance is a result when generating the electricity from the engine in this mode. This could reduce miles per gallon when using the engine but it might be very small

Thanks for your post. I have been wondering about this since we bought our 2023 XC60 last year. I am not totally convinced that you can generate more electric mileage than you lose in gas efficiency by doing that, but I have absolutely no qualification to make that judgement. It seems like if that were the case, electric generation / replenishment of the battery while driving should be the default setting in all hybrid cars or at the very least strongly encouraged in all the literature. I have never seen your question answered definitively, so I appreciate your post and hope there are other responses.

Thanks,
Scott

DOES use more but .... There could very well be times when you'll want to use that way. I don't remember the exact #'s but when I 'also' has a '21 model I tried it twice on the same route driving over 60 miles between Atlanta and Athens while charging the 'E' batteries. Both times my average MPG was in the 20's, but I don't remember exactly what. I guess if you're going to a friend's house w/o a charger to use while you're there and want to be able to start back with a full charge, that could be one reason. Either way, I'm glad it's a PHEV so as long as theres gas in the tank, all is well.

I just recently took a trip. the distance of the trip was 146 miles one direction. Then three hours later I returned home the same distance. I went the same interstate highways and there was very little wind. What I did notice is that when using power mode and then saving some electricity to the battery that the first 20 miles I could do it pretty quick. Then as the battery was building up miles there was more more resistance and at 30 miles it seemed to stop. Full charge for me is about 38 miles.

I also noticed that when using the engine to charge the battery that my miles per gallon went down but I can't tail tell you is how much. My app on my phone with the new vehicle is not the same app as before and it doesn't give me the miles per gallon average for each trip. Bottom line is that adding that energy to the battery that comes in handy when you're in town where efficiency of the engine is less than when you're cruising at 65 miles an hour. I still see it as a plus but not a big financial gain.
