XC60 long trips
In a PHEV I wouldn't suggest stopping to recharge during longer trips. If you set the navigation destination the computer will optimize battery use so that it gets used during the times when it is likely to provide the greatest benefit to fuel economy. The other factor is that these cars do not support fast charging, so charging your battery will take ~ 4-5 hours even if the public charger supports a faster rate.
All that said, I recommend avoiding Volvo PHEV models at the moment as there are some significant quality issues, including apparently common failures of the electric heater, and Volvo is backed up at least a month on parts. In my experience, quality control has been poor in other areas too. If you do decide to buy, carefully inspect and test electric heat before taking delivery.
